ZETTERLUND SCORES TWICE TO LEAD SWEDEN TO U17 BRONZE

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Fabian Zetterlund netted a pair of goals and Erik Brännström added one, all within the first 18 minutes, to lead Sweden to a 3-0 win over Canada Red in the bronze medal game Saturday at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

It’s the second year in a row the Swedes have won the bronze medal, and their third overall; the Scandinavian side also finished third in 2010.

Arvid Söderblom recorded the shutout in just his second start of the tournament, turning aside all 29 Canadian shots he faced; Red outshot Sweden 29-20 overall.

Red held an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, but the Swedes took control early.

Zetterlund got the Swedes on the board while a man down, splitting the Canadian defence and slipping a shot through the five-hole of Red goaltender Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) just past the midway mark of the opening period.

He struck again 4:42 later; Isac Lundeström picked up a rebound at the side of the Canadian goal and found Zetterlund, who snapped a shot over DiPietro’s shoulder.

Brännström played give-and-go with Filip Sveningsson to make it 3-0 at 17:40, and that would be it for offence from both sides.

The Canadians weren’t without their chances, but between Söderblom’s strong play and Swedes throwing themselves at everything they could get in front of, there was no offence to be found.

Red, which made its debut in Dawson Creek after playing three preliminary round games and its semifinal in Fort St. John, dropped its final two games of the tournament after a perfect round robin.

DAWSON CREEK, C.-B. – Fabian Zetterlund a accumulé deux buts et Erik Brännström en a obtenu un, les trois lors des 18 premières minutes, et la Suède a vaincu Canada Rouges 3-0, au match pour la médaille de bronze de samedi, au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015.

C’est la deuxième année de suite que la Suède remporte la médaille de bronze, sa troisième au total. Elle avait également fini troisième en 2010.

Arvid Söderblom a signé le jeu blanc à son deuxième départ du tournoi, repoussant 29 tirs au but. Canada Rouges a dominé 29-20 à ce chapitre.

Canada Rouges a eu l’avantage 11-8 en première période, mais la Suède a pris le contrôle rapidement.

Zetterlund a inscrit les Suédois au pointage en désavantage numérique, séparant la défensive adverse en deux avant de décocher un tir entre les jambières de Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Windsor, OHL) à mi-chemin au premier tiers.

La Suède a touché la cible à nouveau 4 min 42 s plus tard; Isac Lundeström a saisi un retour sur le côté du filet canadien et a repéré Zetterlund, qui a logé le disque par-dessus l’épaule de DiPietro.

Brännström a effectué un passe et va avec Filip Sveningsson, pour finalement porter la marque à 3-0 à 17 min 40 s, ce qui a été le dernier but de la soirée.

Les Canadiens ont pourtant eu des chances, mais le brio de Söderblom et l’acharnement des Suédois ont été trop pour l’offensive canadienne.

Canada Rouges, qui jouait un premier match à Dawson Creek après avoir disputé ses trois matchs de la ronde préliminaire et sa demi-finale à Fort St. John, a perdu ses deux dernières rencontres du tournoi, ayant d’abord maintenu un dossier parfait avant la ronde éliminatoire.
