NEWMAN’S LATE GOAL GIVES ATLANTIC FIFTH PLACE

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Heather Newman (Mount Pearl, N.L./Ridley College, CAHS) scored with only 1:55 remaining in regulation, and Lindsey Donovan (Miramichi, N.B./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS) added an even later insurance marker, as Atlantic came back to defeat Quebec and claim fifth place at the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Sierra Lee (Ferguson’s Cove, N.S./New Hampton School, USHS) scored Atlantic’s first goal.

Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, P.E.I./Charlottetown, PEIMAAA) stopped 18 of 19 shots in net.

Rosalie Bégin-Cyr (St-Georges, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) was the long goal-scorer for Quebec. Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) saved 21 of the 23 shots sent her way.

With time rapidly running down in the third period, it appeared a trend would continue at the 2015 U18 nationals: for three straight days, the 1:30 p.m. ET/10:30 a.m. PT game needed extra time.

Newman ensured that pattern ended when her shot from the face-off circle beat Coulombe.

Quebec pressed for the equalizer, pulling Coulombe with 53 seconds to play, but Donovan got a step on a trio of players and guided the puck into the empty net 20 seconds later.

After an opening period that seemed to lack rhythm, the pace and play from both sides picked up in the middle frame.

Quebec got on the board first with only 2:29 to go in the second. A point shot off a face-off was stopped, but the rebound was met at the top of the crease by three Quebec players, with Bégin-Cyr finally finding the back of the net.

Lee drew her team even six minutes into the third. Atlantic gained control off an offensive zone face-off. A shot from the point was blocked, but the rebound made its way to Coulombe’s left; Lee roofed a backhand short side over the goalie’s glove.

The win was the first in six tries for Atlantic against Quebec at the tournament. The team – made up of eight players from Nova Scotia, five from New Brunswick, four from Newfoundland and three from Prince Edward Island – earned its best finish since 2011.

With the loss Quebec settled for sixth place, its worst result ever at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship. The team has now finished off the podium for three straight tournaments, after winning medals the first seven times the event was played.

HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Heather Newman (Mount Pearl, T.-N.-L./Ridley College, CAHS) a marqué alors qu’il restait 1 min 55 s au temps réglementaire et Lindsey Donovan (Miramichi, N.-B./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS) a ajouté un but d’assurance quelques secondes plus tard pour aider l’Atlantique à vaincre le Québec pour la cinquième place au Championnat national féminin des moins de 18 ans 2015.

Ava Boutilier (Charlottetown, Î.-P.-É./Charlottetown, PEIMAAA) a bloqué 18 des 19 tirs qu’elle a affrontés.

Rosalie Bégin-Cyr (St-Georges, Qc/Limoilou, CÉGEP) a été l’auteure du seul but du Québec. Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, Qc/Limoilou, CÉGEP) a réussi 21 arrêts sur les 23 tirs dirigés vers elle.

Alors que le temps filait au troisième tiers, il semblait bien que la tendance des derniers jours allait se poursuivre au National des M18 2015; au cours des trois derniers jours, le match présenté à 13 h 30 HE/10 h 30 HP a exigé la tenue d’une période de prolongation.

Newman s’est assurée de mettre fin à cette tendance en déjouant Coulombe d’un tir du point de mise au jeu.  

Le Québec a tout fait pour marquer le but égalisateur, retirant Coulombe avec 53 secondes au tableau indicateur, mais Donovan a devancé trois joueuses pour diriger la rondelle dans le filet désert vingt secondes plus tard.

Après une première période sans rythme particulier, les deux formations ont accéléré l’allure du match au deuxième tiers.

Le Québec a ouvert la marque à 2 min 29 s de la fin de la période médiane. Un tir de la pointe à la suite d’une mise au jeu a été bloqué, mais trois Québécoises se trouvaient au haut de l’enceinte pour s’emparer du rebond. Bégin-Cyr a réussi à faire vibrer les mailles du filet.   

Lee a nivelé la marque pour l’Atlantique à la sixième minute du dernier vingt. L’Atlantique a pris le contrôle de la rondelle à la suite d’une mise au jeu en zone offensive, mais le tir de la pointe a été repoussé et la rondelle s’est retrouvée à la gauche de Coulombe où Lee s’en est emparée pour décocher un tir du revers du côté court, par-dessus la mitaine de la gardienne.

Cette victoire était la première de l’Atlantique sur le Québec en six tentatives au tournoi. L’équipe – formée de huit joueuses de la Nouvelle-Écosse, de cinq du Nouveau-Brunswick, de quatre de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador et de trois de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard – obtient son meilleur résultat depuis 2011.  

À la suite de la défaite, le Québec glisse au sixième rang, son pire résultat de l’histoire du Championnat national féminin des moins de 18 ans. L’équipe a maintenant été exclue du podium au cours des trois derniers tournois après avoir remporté une médaille lors des sept premiers événements.
