KOREA UPSETS RUSSIA TO CLAIM BRONZE WITH FIRST-EVER WSHC WIN

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – Min-Su Han paced the offence with a goal and an assist as Korea upset Russia 4-2 in the bronze medal game on Saturday afternoon, earning its first-ever win at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge.

The Koreans were a combined 0-for-14 in their first three appearances before Saturday, including three losses to the Russians, but finally broke through thanks to power-play success and solid goaltending.

Han and Young-Jae Cho converted with the man advantage to give Korea a 2-0 lead through two periods, and 41-year-old Man-Gyun Yu stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced to record the victory in the Korean goal.

Nikolai Terentev scored both goals for the Russians, who failed to win a medal for the first time in three appearances at the tournament; it won bronze in 2013 before taking silver last year.

Han got the scoring started 6:05 into the first period, snapping a shot from the hashmarks past Russian goaltender Evgenii Plotnikov on the power play, and he set up Cho’s power-play goal from the point just shy of the 11-minute mark of the second.

Cho’s goal meant the end of the afternoon for Plotnikov, who was replaced by Mikhail Ivanov after allowing two goals on nine shots.

Ju-Seung Lee finished off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play at 5:09 of the third period to make it 3-0, roofing a shot past Ivanov, but Terentev scored his first just 28 seconds later to get Russia back within two, stripping the puck off a Korean defenceman and beating Yu.

Seung-Hwan Jung picked the top corner on a breakaway at 6:50 to give Korea a 4-1 lead, before Terentev capped the scoring with 3:51 left, redirecting a point shot from Dmitriy Lisov on a Russian power play.

The four goals are the most Korea has ever scored in a World Sledge Hockey Challenge game; it entered with just 11 goals total in its first 14 losses.

It’s just the second time the fourth-place team from the preliminary round has won a medal; the Koreans join Norway, who took home third place from the 2009 tournament in Charlottetown, P.E.I..

BRIDGEWATER, N.-É. – Min-Su Han a dicté le rythme à l’offensive en inscrivant un but et une mention d’aide pour aider la Corée à surprendre la Russie par un gain de 4-2 au match pour la médaille de bronze samedi après-midi, ce qui marquait par le fait même la première victoire de l’histoire des Coréens au Défi mondial de hockey sur luge.

Les Coréens avaient une fiche totale de 0-14 à leurs trois premières participations avant samedi, dont trois défaites contre les Russes, mais ils ont finalement obtenu une victoire grâce au succès de leur jeu de puissance et à l’efficacité de leur gardien de but.

Han et Young-Jae Cho ont touché la cible en avantage numérique pour donner les devants 2-0 à la Corée après deux périodes, et Man-Gyun Yu, le gardien de but âgé de 41 ans, a stoppé 18 des 20 tirs dirigés vers lui pour signer la victoire devant le filet de la Corée.

Nikolai Terentev a obtenu les deux buts de la Russie, qui termine sans médaille pour la première fois en trois participations au tournoi. Elle avait remporté le bronze en 2013 et l’argent l’an dernier.

Han a ouvert la marque en avantage numérique à 6 min 5 s de l’engagement initial en décochant un tir depuis les lignes hachurées qui a battu le gardien de but russe Evgenii Plotnikov, pour ensuite préparer le but de Cho, marqué également pendant un jeu de puissance sur un tir de la pointe tout juste avant la 11e minute de jeu en deuxième période.

Le but de Cho a mis fin au match de Plotnikov, qui a été remplacé par Mikhail Ivanov après avoir accordé deux buts en neuf lancers.

Ju-Seung Lee a complété un superbe tic-tac-toe à 5 min 9 s au dernier tiers pour porter la marque à 3-0 en logeant un tir dans le haut du filet au-dessus d’Ivanov, mais Terentev a inscrit son premier du match seulement 28 secondes plus tard afin de réduire l’écart à deux buts pour la Russie lorsqu’il a volé la rondelle à un défenseur coréen, pour ensuite déjouer Yu.

Seung-Hwan Jung a tiré dans la lucarne en échappée à 6 min 50 s pour donner une avance de 4-1 à la Corée, puis Terentev a marqué le dernier but de la rencontre avec 3 min 51 s à jouer en redirigeant un tir de la pointe de Dmitriy Lisov pendant un jeu de puissance russe.

Les quatre buts inscrits par la Corée représentent son total le plus élevé dans le cadre d’un match au Défi mondial de hockey sur luge. Elle amorçait le match avec une maigre récolte de 11 buts lors de ses 14 premières défaites.

Il s’agit de la deuxième fois seulement que l’équipe en quatrième place après la ronde préliminaire remporte une médaille. La Norvège avait réussi l’exploit en 2009.
