CANADA FALLS TO U.S., SETTLES FOR SILVER AT YOUTH OLYMPICS

LILLEHAMMER, Norway – Ryan Merkley (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Jr. Canadiens, GTHL) and Allan McShane (Collingwood, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) both scored to bring Canada to within one, but the Canadians were left with a silver medal after a 5-2 loss to the United States in the gold medal game Sunday at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

It’s the second time in as many Youth Olympics that Canada has won a medal; it took the bronze medal at the inaugural Games four years ago in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Canadians fell behind just past the midway mark of the first period; after a turnover in the Canadian zone, the puck was worked around to T.J. Walsh, who beat goaltender Alexis Gravel (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Senators, GTHL) for a 1-0 American lead.

Jack Deboer doubled the U.S. advantage just 2:56 into the second period, redirecting a pass from Jacob Pivonka past Gravel on an American power play.

Just minutes after Carson Focht (Regina, Sask./Regina, SMAAAHL) had a would-be goal called back, he set up Merkley, who ripped a point shot past U.S. netminder Drew DeRidder on a Canadian power play to make it a 2-1 game.

But the Americans would answer less than two minutes later when Christian Krygier beat Gravel from the face-off dot, giving the U.S. a 3-1 lead heading to the second intermission.

The start of the third period brought a new goaltender, with Olivier Rodrigue (Canton Tremblay, Que./Jonquière, LHMAAAQ) replacing Gravel, and the Canadians responded by ratcheting up their offence, firing 12 shots at DeRidder after managing just 13 total in the first two periods.

McShane set up an exciting finish by snapping a wrist shot past DeRidder with 3:49 to go, but that would be as close as Canada would get.

Tyler Weiss and Jake Wise hit the empty net in the last minute to provide the final margin of victory.

Canada finished with a 25-23 advantage in shots on goal, but lost the special teams battle; the U.S. was 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Canadians scored once on their three opportunities.

LILLEHAMMER, Norvège – Ryan Merkley (Mississauga, Ont./Jr. Canadiens de Toronto, GTHL) et Allan McShane (Collingwood, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL) ont marqué pour permettre au Canada de se rapprocher à un but, mais les Canadiens devront repartir avec une médaille d’argent, ayant subi un revers de 5-2 aux mains des États-Unis au match pour la médaille d’or des Jeux olympiques de la jeunesse d’hiver 2016, dimanche.

Il s’agit de la deuxième fois en autant de participations à cet événement que le Canada gagne une médaille; il avait gagné le bronze il y a quatre ans à Innsbruck, en Autriche.

Les Canadiens se sont fait compter un premier but à mi-chemin au premier tiers; après un revirement dans leur territoire, la rondelle s’est retrouvée sur la lame de T.J. Walsh qui a eu le meilleur sur le cerbère Alexis Gravel (Mississauga, Ont./Senators de Mississauga, GTHL), donnant une avance de 1-0 aux Américains.

Jack Deboer a doublé l’avance de son équipe à 2 min 56 s de la période médiane, redirigeant une passe de Jacob Pivonka derrière Gravel lors d’un jeu de puissance.

Quelques minutes après, Carson Focht (Regina, Sask./Regina, SMAAAHL) a semblé remettre le Canada dans le match, décochant un tir de la pointe derrière le portier américain Drew DeRidder lors d’un avantage numérique canadien, réduisant l’écart à un but.

Mais les Américains ont répliqué moins de deux minutes plus tard quand Christian Krygier a battu Gravel à partir du point de mise au jeu, procurant aux États-Unis une avance de 3-1 avant le deuxième entracte.

Un nouveau gardien de but a été appelé devant la cage du Canada, alors qu’Olivier Rodrigue (Canton Tremblay, Qc/Jonquière, LHMAAAQ) a remplacé Gravel. L’offensive canadienne a répondu présente en dirigeant 12 tirs vers le filet de DeRidder, après avoir obtenu seulement 13 tirs au but au cours des deux premières périodes.

McShane a mis la table pour une fin de match excitante quand il a trompé la vigilance du portier adverse, avec 3 min 49 s à écouler, mais le Canada n’a jamais pu s’approcher davantage.

Tyler Weiss et Jake Wise ont logé le disque dans un filet désert pour confirmer la victoire des Américains.

Le Canada a dominé 25-23 quant aux tirs au but, mais a perdu la bataille des unités spéciales; les États-Unis ont marqué deux fois en cinq occasions, tandis que la troupe canadienne n’a rien produit en trois avantages numériques.
