LAFERRIERE SCORES AGAIN, LIONS CLINCH FIRST PLACE IN PRELIMS

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Mathias Laferriere scored the game-winner with 1:44 to go – his fifth goal in four games, and second winner – to help the Lions du Lac St-Louis top the North York Rangers on Thursday afternoon to remain the only undefeated team at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

The win clinches first place in the preliminary round for the Lions, who are 4-0 at Canada’s National Midget Championship, they also opened with four consecutive wins in 1977, 1984 and 1991.

North York finally slowed down a Lac St-Louis offence that had hit the 40-shot mark in each of its first three games, holding the Lions to 24, but the Rangers couldn’t find the back of the net themselves.

Laferriere and Alexandre Gagnon led Lac St-Louis with a goal and an assist each, Isiah Campbell had the other goal for the Quebec Region champions, and goaltender Sandro Silvestre got the 23-save win.

William Calverley was the lone goal-scorer for North York.

For the fourth time in as many games the Lions got on the board first; a perfect cross-ice feed from Kyle Havlena found the stick of Gagnon, who had an empty net to make it 1-0 just 6:09 in.

Silvestre and North York counterpart Kyle Henderson kept it a one-goal game for the next 48 minutes, combining to make 34 saves in the first two periods.

Lac St-Louis seemed to be on track for the victory, limiting the Rangers to just five shots on goal in the third period, and none in the first 12 minutes of the final frame.

But Calverley finally pulled North York even at 14:02, finishing off a beautiful give-and-go with Noah Holm by going just under the crossbar past Silvestre.

Laferriere clinched the full two points for the Lions four minutes after that, one-timing a saucer pass from Gagnon out of the reach of Henderson, and Campbell found the empty net with 49 seconds to go.

North York finishes the preliminary round Friday morning, taking on the Lloydminster Bobcats in a showdown for second place (9:30 a.m. AT), while the Lions take on the host Saint John Vito’s in the round-robin finale (4:30 p.m. AT).

QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – Mathias Laferrière a marqué le but gagnant alors qu’il restait 1 min 44 s au chronomètre – son cinquième but en quatre matchs – pour aider les Lions du Lac St-Louis à battre les Rangers de North York, jeudi après-midi, et demeurer la seule équipe invaincue à la Coupe TELUS 2016.

Cette victoire permet aux Lions de s’assurer du premier rang à l’issue de la ronde préliminaire au Championnat national midget du Canada avec une fiche de 4-0; ils avaient aussi entrepris le tournoi avec quatre victoires consécutives en 1977, 1984 et 1991.

North York a réussi à freiner l’offensive de Lac St-Louis, qui avait atteint le plateau des 40 tirs au but à chacun de ses trois matchs précédents, limitant les Lions à 24 tirs, mais les Rangers n’ont pu trouver le fond du filet.

Laferrière et Alexandre Gagnon ont mené l’offensive de Lac St-Louis avec un but et une aide chacun; Isiah Campbell a marqué l’autre but des champions du Québec et le gardien de but Sandro Silvestre a effectué 23 arrêts pour porter la victoire à sa fiche.

William Calverley a été l’auteur du seul but de North York.

Pour la quatrième fois en autant de matchs, les Lions ont marqué le premier but; une passe transversale parfaite de Kyle Havlena s’est retrouvée sur le bâton de Gagnon qui a tiré dans une cage béante pour porter le pointage à 1-0 à 6 min 9 s du premier tiers.

Silvestre et son homologue de North York, Kyle Henderson, ont préservé l’écart d’un but pendant les 48 prochaines minutes, réussissant un total de 34 arrêts au cours des deux premières périodes.

Lac St-Louis semblait en voie de remporter le match, limitant les Rangers à seulement cinq tirs au but en troisième période et à aucun au cours des 12 premières minutes.

Mais Calverley a finalement inscrit North York au tableau de pointage à 14 min 2 s à la suite d’une superbe passe et va avec Noah Holm lorsqu’il a logé la rondelle sous la barre horizontale pour déjouer Silvestre. 

Quatre minutes après le but de Calverley, Laferrière a permis aux Lions d’ajouter deux points à leur fiche en décochant un tir sur réception après avoir capté une passe soulevée de Gagnon que Henderson n’a pu intercepter. Campbell a ensuite marqué dans un filet désert alors qu’il restait 49 secondes à jouer dans la rencontre. 

North York jouera son dernier match préliminaire vendredi matin contre les Bobcats de Loydminster dans un duel pour la deuxième place (9 h 30 HA) tandis que les Lions se mesureront à leurs hôtes, les Vito’s de Saint John, lors du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire (16 h 30 HA).
