CANADA BLANKED BY U.S. IN SLEDGE DEVELOPMENT SERIES

MONTREAL, Que. – Adam Kingsmill (Smithers, B.C.) made 15 saves in his first-ever sledge hockey start, but Canada’s National Sledge Development Team couldn’t find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to the United States on Saturday at the Défi sportif AlterGo.

The Canadian loss evens the series at a win apiece, with the third and deciding game set between the North American rivals for Sunday afternoon (1:30 p.m. ET) at Aréna Howie-Morenz.

Kingsmill, who played minor hockey this season for the Smithers Storm, didn’t look out of place in his international debut, keeping the game scoreless well into the third period.

Defence ruled the first period, with the teams combining for just three shots on goal – the Americans had a 2-1 advantage in the opening 15 minutes.

The only two power-play opportunities – one for each team – highlighted the second period, but Kingsmill turned away all seven shots he faced and American counterpart Griffin LaMarre was two-for-two, sending the game to the third period still without a goal.

Kyle Zych finally broke through for the U.S. just shy of the midway mark of the third period, picking up a loose puck in the corner before cutting to the net and roofing a shot on the short-side of Kingsmill.

Noah Grove added insurance with 90 seconds to go; Zych sprung Grove on a breakaway, and he beat Kingsmill with a pretty under-the-sled deke for the 2-0 goal.

The Americans finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal.

MONTRÉAL, Qc – Kyle Zych et Noah Grove ont donné le ton à l’offensive des États-Unis qui ont vaincu l’équipe nationale de développement sur luge du Canada 2-0 samedi pour créer une égalité de 1-1 dans la série du Défi sportif AlterGo.

Les deux équipes s’affronteront à nouveau sur la glace de l’aréna Howie-Morenz dimanche pour le match décisif à 13 h 30 HE.

Les Américains et les Canadiens ont été solides en défensive au premier tiers de ce match no 2; aucun but n’a été marqué et les États-Unis ont retraité au vestiaire avec une priorité de 2-1 aux tirs au but.

Même si les deux rivaux nord-américains ont obtenu leurs seules occasions en supériorité numérique en deuxième période, rien n’a fonctionné.

Le premier but de la rencontre est survenu à 6 min 25 s de la troisième période quand Zych s’est emparé de la rondelle dans le coin avant de couper au filet pour décocher un tir du poignet dans la lucarne du côté rapproché.

Les Américains ont doublé leur avance à 13 min 30 s, alors qu’une passe de Zych a permis à Grove de s’échapper; ce dernier a effectué une belle feinte sous sa luge avant de glisser la rondelle sous Adam Kingsmill (Smithers, C.-B.).

Dans la défaite, Kingsmill, qui jouait son tout premier match de hockey sur luge, a été solide, effectuant des arrêts clés pour contenir les États-Unis qui ont dominé le Canada 17-6 dans la colonne des tirs au but.
