CANADA SHUT OUT AGAIN, FALLS IN SLEDGE DEVELOPMENT FINALE

MONTREAL, Que. – Canada’s National Sledge Development Team failed to score for the second day in a row, falling 5-0 to the United States on Sunday in the third and final game of the series between the North American rivals at the Défi sportif AlterGo.

The Canadians picked up a 4-1 win in Friday’s opener before a 2-0 loss on Saturday evened the series.

With a partisan crowd behind it at the Aréna Howie-Morenz, Canada had its chances early but couldn’t find a way past American goaltender Griffin LaMarre, who recorded back-to-back shutouts.

The U.S. outshot Canada 6-4 in the first period, and made good on two of those chances; Vlad Lundquist picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired it past Canadian netminder Adam Kingsmill (Smithers, B.C.) at 10:26, and Kelsey DiClaudio doubled the lead 58 seconds later.

Kingsmill gave way to Tyson Rietveld (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) after allowing two goals on five shots, but the 16-year-old returned to the Canadian net for the latter half of the third period.

Canada gave the U.S. three power plays in less than three minutes early in the second period and the Americans converted on the second one when Kyle Zych beat Rietveld under the cross-bar.

Zych netted his second goal of the game – and fourth of the series – to make it 4-0 just past the five-minute mark of the third period, snapping a shot past Rietveld off a face-off win.

Another American power play pushed the lead to 5-0 at 7:35; David Eustace carried the puck into the offensive zone before roofing a quick shot past Rietveld, chasing the Canadian goaltender.

Canada managed only a single shot on goal over the last two periods, and was outshot 19-5 overall.

MONTRÉAL, Qc – L’équipe nationale de développement sur luge du Canada n’a pu marquer pour une deuxième journée de suite, s’inclinant 5-0 devant les États-Unis dimanche lors du troisième et dernier match de la série entre les rivaux nord-américains au Défi sportif AlterGo.

Les Canadiens ont remporté le premier match 4-1 vendredi avant qu’une défaite de 2-0 samedi nivelle la série.

Profitant de l’appui de la foule à l’aréna Howie-Morenz, le Canada a obtenu des occasions de marquer en début de rencontre, mais il n’a pu déjouer le gardien de but américain Griffin LaMarre, qui a réussi deux jeux blancs consécutifs.  

Les États-Unis ont obtenu six tirs au but contre quatre pour le Canada en première période et ils ont fait mouche sur deux d’entre eux; Vlad Lundquist s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre en zone privilégiée pour déjouer le gardien de but canadien Adam Kingsmill (Smithers, C.-B.) à 10 min 26 s, et Kelsey DiClaudio a doublé l’avance 58 secondes plus tard.  

Kingsmill a cédé son poste à Tyson Rietveld (Fort Saskatchewan, Alb.) après avoir accordé deux buts sur cinq tirs, mais le jeune de 16 ans était de retour devant le filet pour la deuxième moitié du troisième tiers.

L’indiscipline du Canada a permis aux États-Unis de profiter de trois supériorités numériques en moins de trois minutes au début de la deuxième période et les Américains ont profité de la dernière lorsque Kyle Zych a déjoué Rietveld avec un tir sous la barre horizontale.  

Zych a compté son deuxième du match – son quatrième de la série – pour creuser l’écart à 4-0 peu après la cinquième minute de jeu de la troisième période en déjouant Rietveld d’un tir dès la mise au jeu.

Pendant une autre supériorité numérique américaine, David Eustace a porté la marque à 5-0 lorsqu’il a transporté la rondelle en zone offensive pour y décocher un tir rapide et déjouer Rietveld, chassant le gardien de but canadien de son poste devant le filet.  

Le Canada n’a obtenu qu’un seul tir au but au cours des deux dernières périodes et il a été dominé 19-5 à ce chapitre dans le match.
