BERNARD SCORES WINNER LATE, KINGS GET FIRST RBC CUP WIN

VERNON, B.C. – Jesse Bernard broke a 1-1 tie with just 1:37 to go, leading the Dauphin Kings to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots in the tournament opener Saturday afternoon at the 2014 RBC Cup.

The win keeps Dauphin undefeated in preliminary round games at Canada’s National Junior A Championship; the Kings went a perfect 5-0 when they hosted the tournament in 2010 before losing to Vernon in the championship game.

Bernard took a pass from behind the net from Tanner Lomsnes and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Toronto Lakeshore goaltender Evan Buitenhuis to give the Kings the lead for the first time, and for good.

Tanner Butler had the other goal for Dauphin (1-0), which scored twice in the final 12 minutes to erase a one-goal deficit after two periods and score the victory.

Michael Stiliadis earned the win in the Dauphin goal with a tremendous performance, making 41 saves.

Jacob Hayhurst scored the lone goal for Toronto Lakeshore (0-1), which lost for just the fifth time in 25 postseason games.

The Patriots carried the play in the early minutes of the first period, holding a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal at one point, but Stiliadis was there time and time again to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes.

It took just 2:57 of the second period for Toronto Lakeshore to get on the board; after a scramble in front of Stiliadis the puck fell to Hayhurst, who beat the sprawling Dauphin goaltender for a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots pushed for more before the end of the middle frame, but were stymied by Stiliadis, who is playing for his third team this season – he started with the OJHL’s Georgetown Raiders and spent a month in Vernon with the RBC Cup host Vipers before landing in Dauphin.

The Kings finally pulled even with 12:04 left in the third period; Butler’s original shot was kicked out by the right pad of Buitenhuis, but he gathered up his own rebound and beat that same right pad to tie the game.

Bernard’s winner came just seconds after another sustained push from Toronto Lakeshore, which held a 42-29 advantage in shots on goal.

Both teams are back in action Sunday; the Kings try for a 2-0 start when they take on the Carleton Place Canadians in the late game (7 p.m. PT), while the Patriots face the Yorkton Terriers in the matinee (2 p.m. PT).

VERNON, C. B. – Jesse Bernard a rompu une égalité de 1-1 avec seulement 1 min 37 s au cadran pour mener les Kings de Dauphin à une victoire de 2-1 contre les Patriots de Toronto Lakeshore au match d’ouverture du tournoi, samedi après-midi, à la Coupe RBC 2014.

Avec cette victoire, Dauphin demeure invaincu en ronde préliminaire au Championnat national junior A du Canada. Les Kings avaient maintenu un dossier parfait de 5-0 lorsqu’ils avaient accueilli l’événement en 2010, avant de s’incliner devant Vernon au match de championnat.

Bernard a accepté une passe de Tanner Lomsnes qui provenait de l’arrière du but avant de loger le disque par-dessus l’épaule du cerbère de Toronto Lakeshore, Evan Buitenhuis, pour donner l’avance à son équipe pour la première fois de la rencontre et les Kings n’ont jamais regardé derrière par la suite.   

Tanner Butler a été l’autre buteur de Dauphin (1-0), qui a touché la cible deux fois dans les 12 dernières minutes pour annuler un déficit d’un but après deux périodes et inscrire le but de la victoire.

Michael Stiliadis a signé la victoire devant la cage de Dauphin, grâce à une superbe performance de 41 arrêts.

Jacob Hayhurst a été le seul à faire scintiller la lumière rouge pour Toronto Lakeshore (0-1), qui a perdu seulement un cinquième match en 25 parties d’après-saison.

Les Patriots ont contrôlé le jeu dans les premières minutes du premier vingt, détenant un avantage de 12-3 dans la colonne des tirs au but à un certain moment, mais Stiliadis a brillé pour garder le pointage à 0-0 après 20 minutes.

Il n’a fallu que 2 min 57 s au deuxième tiers pour que Toronto Lakeshore s’inscrive à la marque. Après une mêlée devant le filet de Stiliadis, la rondelle s’est retrouvée sur la lame de Hayhurst qui a battu le gardien de but de Dauphin, étendu de tout son long, donnant l’avance 1-0 à son équipe.

Les Patriots ont continué de mettre de la pression avant la fin du deuxième tiers, mais Stiliadis n’a rien cédé, lui qui porte les couleurs d’une troisième équipe différente cette saison. Il a amorcé la campagne avec les Raiders de Georgetown de l’OJHL et passé un mois à Vernon avec les hôtes de la Coupe RBC, les Vipers, avant d’aboutir à Dauphin.

Les Kings ont finalement nivelé la marque avec 12 min 04 s à écouler en troisième période. Le tir de Butler a touché la jambière droite de Buitenhuis, mais il a sauté sur son propre retour et battu le gardien du même côté pour créer l’égalité.

Le but de la victoire de Bernard est survenu quelques secondes après une autre poussée de Toronto Lakeshore, qui a dominé 42-29 au chapitre des tirs au but.

Les deux équipes retourneront sur la patinoire dimanche. Les Kings tenteront d’amorcer le tournoi avec une fiche de 2-0 dans un duel contre les Canadians de Carleton Place dans le dernier match de la journée (19 h HP), tandis que les Patriots ont rendez-vous avec les Terriers de Yorkton en après-midi (14 h HP).
