MINTOS OPEN TELUS CUP WITH WIN OVER YOUNG NATIONALS

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Dakota Boutin had a goal and an assist to lead the offence, helping the Prince Albert Mintos to a 4-1 win over the Toronto Young Nationals in the opening game at the 2014 TELUS Cup on Monday afternoon.

The win is Prince Albert’s 15th in a row at Canada’s National Midget Championship, within three of the all-time record of 18 held by Ste-Foy from 1978-80.

Teal Sobkowicz, Lance Yaremchuk and Keegan Kjargaard also scored goals for Prince Albert, while Brody Reimer, Jared Blaquiere, Ryan Duret and Wyatt Grant all picked up assists.

Mintos netminder Connor Ingram stopped 30 of the 31 shots Toronto fired his way.

Boutin got Prince Albert on the board first when he intercepted a pass behind the Toronto net and wrapped the puck around Toronto goaltender Izzy Benigno at the 10:40 mark.

Less than five minutes later, Boutin played the set-up role, sliding on his knees and finding Yaremchuk all alone in the low slot. Yaremchuk’s initial chance was stopped, but he snuck a rebound under Benigno’s glove to double the Mintos’ lead.

Both teams had five-on-three opportunities in the first two periods, but Ingram and Benigno stood tall in their respective nets, keeping it a two-goal game.

The Young Nationals did manage to convert on the man advantage late in the second period, as Mac Graham buried a rebound off a Marco Bozzo shot at 14:52, but Prince Albert regained its two-goal advantage just 82 seconds later, on a Mintos power play, with Kjargaard banging in a loose puck in tight.

Sobkowicz capped the scoring on a breakaway early in the third period, snapping a shot over the glove of Benigno.

The Mintos held a 39-31 advantage in shots on goal and both teams were busy on the power play; Prince Albert finished 2-for-9 with the man advantage, while Toronto had a goal on seven chances.

Prince Albert will go for a 2-0 start Tuesday afternoon against the Grenadiers de Châteauguay (noon MT), while Toronto tries again for its first win when it faces the Halifax McDonald’s in the day’s middle contest (4 p.m. MT).

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Dakota Boutin a obtenu un but et une mention d’aide pour mener l’offensive des Mintos de Prince Albert et les aider à vaincre les Young Nationals de Toronto 4-1 dans le match d’ouverture de la Coupe TELUS 2014, lundi après-midi.

Cette victoire est la 15e de suite de Prince Albert au championnat national midget du Canada ce qui place l’équipe à trois du record de tous les temps de 18 établi par Sainte-Foy de 1978 à 1980.

Teal Sobkowicz, Lance Yaremchuk et Keegan Kjargaard ont aussi marqué pour Prince Albert, tandis que Brody Reimer, Jared Blaquiere, Ryan Duret et Wyatt Grant ont tous obtenu des mentions d’aide.

Le gardien de but des Mintos, Connor Ingram, a repoussé 30 des 31 tirs que Toronto a dirigés vers lui.

Boutin a ouvert la marque pour Prince Albert lorsqu’il a intercepté une passe derrière le filet de Toronto et a réussi un enroulé qui a déjoué le gardien de but de Toronto, Izzy Benigno, à 10 min 40 s du premier tiers.

Moins de cinq minutes plus tard, Boutin a préparé le prochain but des siens. Glissant à genoux sur la glace, il a repéré Yaremchuk laissé seul en zone privilégiée. Le tir initial de Yaremchuk a été repoussé, mais l’avant s’est emparé du rebond et a fait mouche pour doubler l’avance des Mintos.

Les deux équipes ont eu des supériorités de cinq contre trois au cours des deux premières périodes, mais Ingram et Benigno veillaient au grain devant leur filet respectif, maintenant l’écart à deux buts.

Les Young Nationals sont parvenus à tirer profit d’une supériorité numérique en fin de deuxième période. Mac Graham a marqué en s’emparant du rebond d’un tir de Marco Bozzo à 14 min 52 s, mais Prince Albert a repris une avance de deux buts 82 secondes plus tard, pendant une supériorité numérique, grâce au but de Kjargaard qui a marqué d’un tir à bout portant en s’emparant d’une rondelle libre.

Sobkowicz a scellé l’issue du match lorsqu’il s’est avancé en échappée au troisième tiers pour décocher un tir frappé court par-dessus la mitaine de Benigno.

Les Mintos ont dominé 39-31 au chapitre des tirs au but et les deux formations se sont affairées en avantage numérique; Prince Albert a marqué à deux reprises en neuf occasions et Toronto a fait mouche une fois en sept occasions.

Prince Albert tentera de porter sa fiche à 2-0 mardi après-midi lorsqu’elle affrontera les Grenadiers de Châteauguay (midi HR) tandis que Toronto visera une première victoire lorsqu’elle jouera contre les McDonald’s de Halifax dans le match en fin d’après-midi (16 h HR).
