MICHASIW BLANKS GENERALS, MINTOS CLINCH SEMIFINAL SPOT

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Lane Michasiw stopped all 30 shots he faced, helping the Prince Albert Mintos to Saskatchewan bragging rights at the 2014 TELUS Cup with a 2-0 win over the Moose Jaw Generals on Thursday night.

The victory means Prince Albert (2-0-2) is guaranteed a spot in Saturday’s semifinals, while Moose Jaw (0-2-2) needs a win in its preliminary round finale Friday afternoon (4:30 p.m. MT) against the Grenadiers de Châteauguay – along with help in the day’s other two games – to play on the weekend.

Loch Morrison and Lance Yaremchuk had the goals for the Mintos, who tied the longest unbeaten streak in tournament history with the win.

Prince Albert has not lost in 18 consecutive games (17-0-1) dating back to 2006. It now shares the mark with Ste-Foy, which won 18 straight from 1978-80.

The Mintos took the body early, setting the tone with a number of big hits, but neither team could make a dent on the scoreboard; the game went to the first intermission scoreless, with Prince Albert’s Carson Cayer getting the best chance, hitting the post on a breakaway opportunity.

The defensive struggle continued in the second, but this time it was the Generals who set the pace, forcing the Mintos into three penalties and holding a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal in the middle frame.

But it would be Prince Albert who would end the period with a lead, thanks to a late goal.

With the seconds ticking away, Wyatt Grant fired a no-look pass from the corner that took a funny bounce off Moose Jaw goaltender Grant Naherniak and ended up on the stick of Morrison, who wired a shot over the glove of the screened Generals goaltender with just 12 seconds left in the frame.

Moose Jaw had three more power plays in the third period but couldn’t solve Michasiw, and a goalpost in the last minute produced a red light and a mild celebration, but not a goal.

The Mintos clinched the win with 49 seconds left; a forecheck by Kody White caused a turnover deep in the Moose Jaw zone, and a loose puck popped out to Yaremchuk, who deposited the insurance goal into the empty net.

Prince Albert closes out its preliminary round schedule Friday afternoon (1 p.m. MT) against the Halifax McDonald’s, with the Generals hoping their provincial rivals can finish with a win and help their semifinal cause.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Lane Michasiw a bloqué les 30 tirs dirigés vers lui, aidant les Mintos de Prince Albert, représentants de la Saskatchewan à la Coupe TELUS 2014, à l’emporter 2-0 contre les Generals de Moose Jaw, jeudi soir.

Avec cette victoire, Prince Albert (2-0-2) est assuré de jouer en demi-finale samedi, alors que Moose Jaw (0-2-2) devra gagner son dernier match de la ronde préliminaire vendredi après-midi (16 h 30 HR) contre les Grenadiers de Châteauguay et avoir de l’aide dans les deux autres parties de la journée pour espérer jouer en fin de semaine.

Loch Morrison et Lance Yaremchuk ont fait mouche pour les Mintos, qui ont égalisé la plus longue séquence de matchs sans défaite de l’histoire du tournoi avec cette victoire.

Prince Albert n’a pas perdu au cours de ses 18 dernières parties (17-0-1) depuis 2006. Il partage maintenant cette marque avec Ste-Foy, qui a remporté 18 matchs de suite de 1978 à 1980.

Les Mintos ont fait la loi sur le plan physique dès le début, distribuant de grosses mises en échec, mais aucune équipe n’a pu s’inscrire au pointage. La marque était toujours de 0-0 après 20 minutes, alors que Carson Cayer de Prince Albert avait obtenu la meilleure chance, touchant le poteau en échappée.

La bataille défensive s’est poursuivie en période médiane, mais cette fois, ce sont les Generals qui ont donné le ton, forçant les Mintos à écoper de trois punitions et dominant 17-7 dans la colonne des tirs au but.

Cependant, Prince Albert a terminé la période avec une avance, grâce à un filet juste avant le deuxième entracte.

Alors que les secondes s’écoulaient, Wyatt Grant a effectué une passe à l’aveuglette du coin qui a rebondi bizarrement sur le gardien de but de Moose Jaw, Grant Naherniak, pour aboutir sur la lame de Morrison qui a décoché un tir par-dessus la mitaine du cerbère qui avait la vue voilée, avec 12 secondes à faire.

Moose Jaw a obtenu trois autres avantages numériques au troisième tiers, mais n’a pu solutionner l’énigme Michasiw. Un poteau à la dernière minute a fait scintiller la lumière rouge et lancé une célébration partielle dans la foule, mais il n’y a pas eu de but.

Les Mintos ont confirmé leur victoire avec 49 secondes à écouler. L’échec avant de Kody White a causé un revirement dans le fond de la zone de Moose Jaw et une rondelle libre s’est retrouvée entre les mains de Yaremchuk qui a marqué le but d’assurance dans une cage ouverte.

Prince Albert terminera sa ronde préliminaire vendredi après-midi (13 h HR) contre les McDonald’s de Halifax. Les Generals espéreront que leurs rivaux provinciaux l’emporteront pour les aider dans leurs chances de se rendre en demi-finale.
