CANADA SHUTS OUT FINLAND 3-0 IN NAILBITER PRELIMINARY GAME

SOCHI, Russia – Meghan Agosta-Marciano (Ruthven, Ont./Montreal, CWHL), Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) scored in the third period as Canada overcame a spirited challenge from Finland to win 3-0 on Monday at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Hefford and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) both had assists in the victory.

Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta./Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, ACAC) made 14 saves for the shutout to pick up her first win of the Games. Netminder Noora Raty stopped 39 shots for Finland.

The win was Canada’s fifth straight over Finland in Winter Games history, and its 17th straight Olympic win overall. Canada has now shut out Finland in 10 straight periods, going back to the third period of the semifinals in 2002.

Finland has only one tie to show in more than 50 all-time games against Canada. But a negative mindset that could come from that lack of success was nowhere to be seen through the first two periods. The Finns skated stride for stride with the Canadians and asserted themselves on the ice.

Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) told CBC Sports after the game that despite being kept off the score sheet for 40 minutes, the red and white didn’t see the need to make adjustments.

“I think we just stuck to the game plan,” Jenner said. “We were generating a lot of shots. We were just making small tweaks, trying to get in front of (Raty’s) eyes.”

Agosta-Marciano finally beat Raty at 9:27 in the third, when she fired home her own rebound on the power play.

Hefford doubled the lead three minutes later on a great individual effort. The five-time Olympian worked her way through three defenders and beat Raty in close with a forehand, glove side.

Johnston rounded out the scoring when she finished off a pretty passing play from Poulin and Hefford.

While the first 49 minutes may have been white-knuckled times for Canadian fans inside Shayba Arena and back home, the players knew if they stayed the course, good things would happen.

“(Finland) is a hardworking team and they clog the middle really well,” Jenner told CBC Sports. “Our game plan was to not be impatient. It turned out that it worked in the third period.”

The only sign of impatience was before the start of the third period, as the players cut their second intermission short and waited in the hallway to take the ice. Poulin rang a shot off the post early in the period, and from there it was only a matter of time before they found the back of the net.

SOTCHI, Russie – Meghan Agosta-Marciano (Ruthven, Ont./Montréal, LCHF), Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) et Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Toronto, LCHF) ont marqué en troisième période et le Canada a surmonté un défi stimulant que leur a offert la Finlande en l’emportant 3-0.

Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alb./Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, ACAC) a effectué 14 arrêts pour signer son premier gain et jeu blanc aux Jeux olympiques d’hiver de 2014. La cerbère Noora Raty a repoussé 39 rondelles pour la Finlande.

Cette victoire a été la cinquième de suite du Canada face à la Finlande dans l’histoire des Jeux olympiques et son 17e triomphe de suite aux Olympiques. Les Canadiennes ont blanchi les Finlandaises lors de dix périodes consécutives, si on remonte à la troisième période des demi-finales des Jeux olympiques d’hiver de 2002 à Salt Lake City, Utah.

La Finlande a seulement réussi à arracher un verdict nul en 50 matchs face au Canada. Cependant, un esprit négatif qui aurait pu venir d’un manque de succès ne s’est vraiment pas fait sentir au cours des 40 premières minutes. Les Finlandaises ont suivi le rythme des Canadiennes et se sont affirmées sur la glace.

À l’issue de la rencontre, Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont./Université Cornell, ECAC) a affirmé à l’ancienne d’Équipe Canada Jennifer Botterill de CBC Sports que même si le rouge et blanc n’avait pas touché la cible au cours des 40 premières minutes, il n’a pas senti le besoin d’apporter des ajustements.

« Je pense que nous avons simplement suivi notre plan de match », confie Jenner. « Nous obtenions plusieurs tirs au but. Nous apportions seulement quelques ajustements pour essayer de nous placer devant les yeux de Raty. »

Agosta-Marciano a finalement battu Raty à 9 min 27 s du troisième vingt, lorsqu’elle a décoché un tir en s’emparant de son propre retour lors d’un jeu de puissance.

Hefford a doublé l’avance des siennes trois minutes plus tard grâce à un superbe effort individuel. Celle qui participe à ses cinquièmes Jeux olympiques s’est faufilée à travers trois joueuses adverses pour battre Raty de près du revers, du côté de la mitaine.

Johnston a fermé les livres lorsqu’elle a complété un superbe jeu de passes de Poulin et Hefford.

Même si les 49 premières minutes ont pu être éprouvantes pour les amateurs canadiens à l’aréna Shayba et à la maison, les joueuses savaient que si elles continuaient de suivre leur chemin, de bonnes choses pourraient survenir.

« La Finlande est une équipe travaillante et elle ferme très bien le centre de la glace », a raconté Jenner au CBC Sports. « Notre plan de match était de faire preuve de patience. Les choses ont bien fonctionné en troisième période. »

Le seul signe d’impatience est survenu avant le début du troisième tiers, alors que les joueuses ont réduit leur deuxième entracte pour attendre dans le couloir menant à la patinoire. Poulin a touché le poteau en début de période et à partir de ce moment, ce n’était qu’une question de temps avant que l’équipe ne trouve le fond du filet.
