AGOSTA-MARCIANO SCORES TWICE AS CANADA EDGES AMERICAN RIVALS 3-2

KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE

SOCHI, Russia – Meghan Agosta-Marciano (Ruthven, Ont./Montreal, CWHL) celebrated her 27th birthday by scoring two third period goals to help Canada’s National Women’s Team edge the United States 3-2 in preliminary round action Wednesday at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The much-anticipated match-up was exactly what women’s hockey fans wanted to see between the two bitter rivals, who have combined to win all four Olympic gold medals in the sport’s history. Canada has claimed the last three, while the U.S. won the first-ever gold medal at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

Wednesday’s game marked the first time the Canadians have faced off against their North American neighbours in the preliminary round at the Olympics since 1998, due to a new tournament format. It was a fast-paced and furious affair that had fans inside Shayba Arena, and watching live on CBC Sports, on the edges of their seats from first puck drop to final buzzer.

Canada came out strong in the first, matching the U.S. stride for stride throughout the period, with three penalties traded in what proved to be a typically physical game between the two top teams in the world.

The second was a little shakier for the Canadian women, and while netminder Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que./Montreal Stars, CWHL) was able to make some big saves throughout, a penalty ended up costing her team late in the period. Anne Schleper sent a shot from the point, which Hilary Knight was able to get a piece of to put the United States up 1-0 with less than two-and-a-half minutes left in the middle frame.

But the third belonged to Canada, led by continued strong goaltending from Labonté and the offensive prowess of Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./University of Calgary, CIS) and birthday girl Agosta-Marciano, who capitalized on a power play to tie the game. Wickenheiser fed the puck up ice to her linemate, who sent a quick shot off into the back of the net at 2:21 of the final frame.

Wickenheiser added a goal of her own just over a minute and a half later, with Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) and Agosta-Marciano both assisting. Wickenheiser got her stick on the puck as it trickled past a surprised U.S. goaltender Jessie Vetter, and while a short controversy followed, officials quickly confirmed that the whistle had not blown before the puck slipped over the goal line.

Agosta-Marciano scored her second goal, and recorded her third point, at 14:55, snatching up a loose puck in the neutral zone and speeding to the net on a breakaway, finding the five-hole to give Canada a 3-1 late-game lead.

Although Schleper was able to add another to the scoreboard for the U.S. when the Americans pulled Vetter late, Canada was able to hold off the final offensive push to clinch first in Group A.

Labonté was focused and solid between the posts, making 25 saves.

“It felt so good,” Labonté told CBC Sports following the win. “We’ve been struggling a little bit in the past couple of games against them. We’ve worked really hard to readjust and become a better team.

“They came out really strong, as expected. So I’m really glad that we came out with the win.”

Canada earns a bye straight to semifinals Monday, Feb. 17. Follow Canada’s National Women’s Team as it continues its Sochi 2014 journey at www.twitter.com/hc_women.
