TUOMINEN’S GOAL GIVES FINLAND FIRST WIN

Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Minnamari Tuominen’s goal with 8:18 to play in the third period was all the offence Finland needed to defeat Sweden Wednesday afternoon at the 2014 4 Nations Cup.

Susanna Tapani and Jenni Hiirikoski picked up the assists on the game’s only goal.

Vilma Vaattovaara stopped all 15 shots she faced to pick up Finland’s first win of the event.

Her counterpart, Sara Grahn, made 29 saves in taking the loss for Sweden.

In a game that quickly became a goalie’s duo, it was a lucky break that led to Finland breaking the deadlock.

After killing a pair of penalties early in the third, Finland headed up ice with some extra step in its stride.
Tapani drove strong up the boards, only to have the puck intercepted at the blue line by a linesman. Trailing the play, Tuominen picked up the loose puck, drove backhand, then let a forehand go as she approached the net. Grahn stopped the initial shot, but the Finnish defenceman put the rebound over the goalie’s blocker shoulder.

Sweden pulled Grahn with under two minutes to play, but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Sweden’s continues to struggle to find the back of the net at the 4 Nations Cup. The team has now been shut out in its first two games, and going back to last year’s bronze medal game against the United States, its scoreless streak at the event is now at 160:40.

Grahn did her best to give her team a lift. She stoned Riikka Välilä on a breakaway, blocked Tapani’s one-timer from the side of the crease on a Finnish five-on-three and stopped Saila Saari’s tip of a cross-ice feed on the same power play.

Thursday is an off-day at the 4 Nations Cup. When play resumes on Friday, Sweden will take on the United States in the afternoon (4 pm ET/1 pm PT) and Finland will play Canada in the night game (10 pm ET/7 pm PT).

TUOMINEN MARQUE ET LA FINLANDE L’EMPORTE

Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, C.-B.
