AMERICANS OVERCOME HOT GOALIE, WIN FINAL PRELIMINARY GAME

Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Sara Grahn  proved to be a brick wall for the second game in a row, but for the third game in a row Sweden couldn’t find the back of the net, falling 3-2 to the United States Friday afternoon.

Of the 50 shots the Americans fired at Grahn, only one each from Hilary Knight, Emily Pfalzer and Brianna Decker beat the Swedish netminder.

Shiann Darkangelo picked up two assists, while Lee Stecklein, Dani Cameranesi and Alex Carpenter had one each.

Brianne McLaughlin-Bittle made 11 saves for the shutout.

The United States finished its preliminary round play with a 2-1 record. Sweden fell to 0-3.

Grahn created a highlight reel of saves in her previous start versus Finland (a 1-0 loss Wednesday) and looked to be picking up where she left off when she stopped Paige Savage on a breakaway two minutes after the teams took the ice.

But Sweden hasn’t seemed to be able to catch a break this week.

A little over three minutes later, Grahn made a blocker save on Knight’s shot from the top of the slot, but unaware that the puck had fallen into the crease, kicked it into the net with the back of the skate.

With Sweden’s inability to score so far, going down two would probably be too much to overcome. But with Fanny Rask (hooking) and Jenni Asserholt (cross-checking) sitting a near simultaneous two, the Americans doubled their lead 14:25 into the second period.

After the United States worked the puck around the zone, Pfalzer’s shot from the face-off dot surprised Grahn.

Sweden had a chance to cut the deficit in half on a late power play, but was unable to set up even once in the offensive zone.

Instead, with 32 seconds to play in the period, Decker drove through the face-off circle and put a backhand over Grahn’s shoulder.

After 40 minutes the United States led only 3-0 on the scoreboard, but 42-6 on the shot count.

Sweden was able to generate its first quality scoring chances halfway through the third, but couldn’t find its first goal and some momentum going into Saturday’s bronze medal game.

LES AMÉRICAINES TRIOMPHENT D’UNE EXCELLENTE GARDIENNE ET GAGNENT LEUR DERNIER MATCH PRÉLIMINAIRE

Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, C.-B.
