CANADA BESTS ITALY FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT WORLDS WIN

MINSK, Belarus – Cody Hodgson (Markham, Ont./Buffalo, NHL) scored twice to lead the offence for the second game in a row, helping Canada’s National Men’s Team to its fourth straight win at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, 6-1 over Italy on Friday.

Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, Sask./Philadelphia, NHL) and Joel Ward (North York, Ont./Washington, NHL) contributed a goal and an assist each, Nathan MacKinnon (Cole Harbour, N.S./Colorado, NHL) added two helpers and James Reimer (Morweena, Man./Toronto, NHL) made 23 saves in the win.

Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C./Ottawa, NHL) and Jason Chimera (Edmonton, Alta./Washington, NHL) had Canada’s other goals.

The lone Italian goal came off the stick of David Borelli, and both goaltenders – Daniel Bellissimo and Andreas Bernard – saw action.

Canada opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first period; Ward forced a turnover just outside the Italian zone and down the wing before beating Bellissimo on Canada’s third shot of the game.

Hodgson took advantage of a five-minute Canadian power play early in the second period, banging a rebound past Bellissimo to double the lead at 1:09.

“We just talked about keeping it simple out there,” Matt Read (Ilderton, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) said of the Canadian power play. “Whenever there was a rebound, you know there was always someone there to battle and to get that puck back. Our power play was solid tonight.”

The Hodgson goal opened the floodgates in the middle frame, and the Canadians added three more before the end of the period.

First it was Chimera taking a beautiful two-on-one pass from Mark Scheifele (Kitchener, Ont./Winnipeg, NHL) and snapping a wrist shot under Bellissimo’s glove, followed three minutes later by a shorthanded marker from Turris, who took a feed from Read and buried his second shorthanded goal in as many days.

“Our first priority is taking away opportunities and not allowing them to score,” Read said of the penalty kill. “Tonight and last game, [Kyle and I] created odd-man rushes by playing smart defence and reading the right time to press for the puck. We’ve been fortunate to take advantage of those opportunities.”

Hodgson added his second of the period late in the stanza, scoring on another rebound after a terrific individual effort from MacKinnon.

The goal was Hodgson’s fifth in two games and sixth overall, good for the tournament lead.

Borelli spoiled Reimer’s shutout bid early in the third period, tipping a point shot past the Canadian netminder, but Schenn finished a sensational feed from MacKinnon to provide the final margin of victory.

The Canadians are back on the ice Sunday, facing Sweden at 9:45 a.m. ET/6:45 a.m. PT, live on TSN.

“It’s going to be a good game, a fun game,” Read said. “We lost to them in the quarter-finals last year, so it gives us a shot at revenge.”

Le seul but de la troupe italienne a été l’œuvre de David Borelli et les deux gardiens de but, Daniel Bellissimo et Andreas Bernard ont vu de l’action.

Le Canada a ouvert la marque à la 13e minute de jeu du premier vingt. Ward a forcé un revirement tout juste en dehors de la zone italienne et sur l’aile avant de tromper la vigilance de Bellissimo sur le troisième tir du Canada.

Hodgson a profité d’un jeu de puissance de cinq minutes du Canada en début de période médiane pour s’emparer d’un retour et loger le disque derrière Bellissimo, doublant l’avance des siens à 1 min 09 s.

« Nous avons simplement voulu garder les choses simples », a dit Matt Read (Ilderton, Ont./Philadelphie, LNH) à propos de l’avantage numérique canadien. « Chaque fois qu’il y avait un retour, nous savions qu’il y avait toujours quelqu’un pour batailler pour la rondelle et s’en emparer. Notre jeu de puissance a été efficace ce soir. »

Le but de Hodgson a ouvert les valves en deuxième période et les Canadiens en ont ajouté trois autres avant la fin de la période.

D’abord, Chimera a accepté une superbe passe de Mark Scheifele (Kitchener, Ont./Winnipeg, LNH) lors d’un 2 contre 1, décochant un tir sous la mitaine de Bellissimo. Trois minutes plus tard, Turris a compté en infériorité numérique, lui qui a saisi une passe de Read pour compter un deuxième filet en pareille circonstance en autant de jours.

« Notre priorité était d’étouffer leurs chances et de les empêcher de marquer », a confié Read à propos de cette infériorité numérique. « Ce soir et lors du dernier match, Kyle et moi avons créé des surnombres en jouant intelligemment en défensive et en appliquant de la pression pour la rondelle aux moments opportuns. Nous avons eu la chance d’en profiter. »

Hodgson a inscrit son deuxième de la période peu de temps avant le deuxième entracte, marquant sur un autre retour à la suite d’un magnifique effort individuel de MacKinnon.

Ce but a été le cinquième de Hodgson en deux parties et son sixième de la compétition, ce qui lui vaut la tête de ce chapitre dans le tournoi.

Borelli a arraché le jeu blanc de Reimer en début de troisième période, faisant dévier un tir de la pointe derrière le cerbère canadien, mais Schenn a complété une superbe passe de MacKinnon pour sceller l’issue du match.

Les Canadiens seront de retour sur la glace dimanche contre la Suède à 9 h 45 HE/6 h 45 HP, dans un duel présenté en direct sur RDS.

« Ce sera un bon match qui sera plaisant à jouer », a affirmé Read. « Nous avons perdu contre eux en quart de finale l’an dernier, donc nous devons prendre notre revanche. »
