KONECNY’S LATE GOAL SENDS CANADA TO SEMIFINALS AT U18 WORLDS

IMATRA, Finland – Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) scored the game-winning goal with just 30 seconds to go, helping Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team beat Switzerland 3-2 in a Thursday quarter-final at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship.

Canada will face the Czech Republic in Saturday’s semifinals; the game can be seen live on TSN beginning at noon ET/9 a.m. PT.

Sweden and the United States will meet in the other semifinal.

With the seconds ticking away and overtime looming, Konecny took a pass in the slot from Travis Sanheim (Elkhorn, Man./Calgary, WHL) and went to the backhand, sneaking a shot past the blocker of Swiss goaltender Gauthier Descloux.

Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, B.C./Calgary, WHL) and John Quenneville (Edmonton, Alta./Brandon, WHL) scored the other goals for Canada, which is into the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.

Sanheim had two assists, while Mason McDonald (Halifax, N.S./Charlottetown, QMJHL) finished with 19 saves in the Canadian goal.

The Swiss opened the scoring at the 7:50 mark when Dominik Diem roofed a shot over McDonald’s shoulder, but Virtanen pulled Canada even 10 minutes later, hammering a slap shot past Descloux on a power play.

Quenneville gave the Canadians their first lead 12 minutes into the second period, picking the puck in the slot and beating Descloux for his first goal.

That lead stood up until the game’s final minutes; with Virtanen in the penalty box, Kevin Fiala pulled Switzerland even at 15:43, converting the seventh power play opportunity for the Swiss.

But Konecny’s third of the tournament – tying him with Virtanen for the team lead – was the difference, helping Canada improve to 4-1 all-time against the Swiss at the world championship.

Switzerland finished with a 21-17 advantage in shots on goal, and both teams scored once with the power play; Canada was 1-for-4, while the Swiss had a goal in seven chances.

IMATRA, Finlande – Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) a marqué le but gagnant alors qu’il ne restait que 30 secondes à jouer, aidant l’équipe nationale masculine des moins de 18 ans du Canada à battre la Suisse 3-2, jeudi, en quart de finale au Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace des moins de 18 ans 2014 de l’IIHF.

Le Canada affrontera la République tchèque samedi en demi-finale. Le match sera présenté en direct sur TSN et RDS à midi HE/9 h HP.  

La Suède et les États-Unis s’affronteront dans l’autre demi-finale.  

Alors que les secondes s’écoulaient et que la prolongation pointait à l’horizon, Konecny a capté une passe de Travis Sanheim (Elkhorn, Man./Calgary, WHL) en zone privilégiée et a décoché un tir du revers pour déjouer le gardien suisse Gauthier Descloux du côté de son gant bloqueur.

Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, C.-B./Calgary, WHL) et John Quenneville (Edmonton, Alb./Brandon, WHL) ont inscrit les autres buts du Canada qui se qualifie pour les demi-finales pour une quatrième année de suite.  

Sanheim a obtenu deux mentions d’aides dans la rencontre et Mason McDonald (Halifax, N.-É./Charlottetown, LHJMQ) a effectué 19 arrêts devant le filet canadien.  

Les Suisses ont ouvert la marque à 7 min 50 s quand Dominik Diem a déjoué McDonald d’un tir dans la partie supérieure, mais Virtanen a égalisé la marque pour le Canada 10 minutes plus tard au moyen d’un puissant tir frappé pendant une supériorité numérique.

Quenneville a donné l’avance aux Canadiens pour la première fois du match à la 12e minute de la deuxième période en récupérant la rondelle en zone privilégiée et en déjouant Descloux; il s’agissait de son premier but du tournoi.  

L’avance aura duré jusqu’aux dernières minutes du match. Alors que Virtanen était au banc des punitions, Kevin Fiala a nivelé la marque pour la Suisse à 15 min 43 s, tirant profit du septième avantage numérique de la Suisse.

Mais le troisième but du tournoi de Konecny – qui le place à égalité au premier rang des pointeurs de l’équipe – a scellé l’issue du match. Le Canada présente maintenant une fiche globale de 4-1 contre la Suisse au championnat mondial.  

La Suisse a terminé la rencontre avec une avance de 21-17 au chapitre des tirs au but et les deux formations ont fait mouche une fois en supériorité numérique; le Canada a tiré profit d’une de ses quatre occasions, tandis que la Suisse a compté une fois en huit occasions.
