HORA SCORES IN OVERTIME, ROCKETS WIN BRONZE MEDAL

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Linden Hora scored his second goal of the game 3:28 into overtime, giving the Okanagan Rockets a 3-2 win over the Toronto Young Nationals on Sunday afternoon and the bronze medal at the 2014 TELUS Cup.

Hora picked up a loose puck behind the net before surprising Izzy Benigno with a shot that beat the Toronto goaltender through the five-hole, ending the first bronze medal game to go to overtime since 2006.

It’s the first medal for the Rockets in their first appearance at Canada’s National Midget Championship, while the Young Nationals came up one goal short in their quest for a second TELUS Cup bronze.

Liam Finlay scored the other goal for Okanagan, which trailed 2-0 six minutes into the third period.

Marco Bozzo had a goal and an assist to lead the attack for Toronto, which also got a goal from Kaelan O’Flynn.

Each team hit a post and each fired eight shots on goal in the opening period, which ended scoreless.

It took 35 minutes for the game’s first goal, and the Young Nationals struck twice in 3:03, both on the power play for a two-goal lead; first it was O’Flynn, who rocketed a slap shot over the glove of Okanagan netminder Reid Kilburn with Toronto on a two-man advantage, followed shortly after by Bozzo, who also went upstairs on Kilburn to make it 2-0.

The Rockets, who hammered Toronto 11-2 on Friday in the preliminary round finale for both teams, came out firing in the third period, holding a 17-8 advantage in shots on goal in the final frame.

Hora got the Pacific Region champions on the board at 6:14, beating Izzy Benigno to the rebound of a Kobe Oishi shot and slipping a loose puck around the Toronto goaltender.

Okanagan’s offensive push continued, and it was rewarded on the power play with just 4:50 to go; Tanner Campbell carried the puck behind the Young Nationals’ net before dropping a no-look, behind-the-back pass to Finlay.

With Benigno looking the other way, Finlay had no trouble tying the game and forcing overtime and setting up Hora’s extra-time winner.

Kilburn got the win in his first start of the postseason, making 27 saves, while Benigno stopped 34 of 37 in a losing cause.

Both teams converted on the power play; Okanagan finished 1-for-5, while Toronto had two goals on four chances.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Linden Hora a compté son deuxième but du match à 3 min 28 s de la prolongation, procurant aux Rockets d’Okanagan une victoire de 3-2 contre les Young Nationals de Toronto ainsi que la médaille de bronze de la Coupe TELUS 2014.

Hora a repris une rondelle errante derrière le but avant de surprendre Izzy Benigno avec un tir qui a battu le gardien de but de Toronto entre ses jambières, mettant fin au premier match pour la médaille de bronze se concluant en prolongation depuis 2006.

C’est la première médaille pour les Rockets qui en étaient à leur première participation au Championnat national midget du Canada, alors que les Young Nationals ont perdu par un but dans leur quête d’une deuxième médaille de bronze à la Coupe TELUS.

Liam Finlay a marqué l’autre but d’Okanagan, qui tirait de l’arrière après six minutes de jeu en troisième période, portant le compte à 2-0.

Marco Bozzo a accumulé un but et une mention d’aide en menant l’attaque de Toronto, qui a aussi obtenu un but de Kaelan O’Flynn.

Chaque équipe a frappé un poteau et décoché huit tirs au but au cours d’une première période sans but.

Il a fallu attendre 35 minutes avant que survienne le premier filet; les Young Nationals ont frappé deux fois en aussi peu que 3 min 03 s en avantage numérique, se donnant une avance de deux buts. D’abord, O’Flynn a décoché un tir frappé par-dessus la mitaine du gardien de but d’Okanagan Reid Kilburn pour Toronto en avantage numérique de deux joueurs, suivi peu de temps après de Bozzo, qui a aussi battu Kilburn dans la partie supérieure, portant le compte à 2-0.

Les Rockets, qui avaient martelé Toronto de 11 tirs contre deux vendredi lors du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire pour chacune des deux formations, ont sorti l’artillerie lourde en troisième et fait feu à 17 reprises contre leurs adversaires alors que ceux-ci n’ont riposté que huit fois, faisant donc preuve d’un net avantage sur leurs rivaux en cette fin de match.

Hora a réinscrit les champions de la région du Pacifique au pointage à 6 min 14 s, battant Izzy Benigno en profitant du rebond d’un tir de Kobe Oishi et en glissant cette rondelle libre derrière le gardien de but de Toronto.

La poussée offensive d’Okanagan s’est poursuivie et a porté ses fruits lors d’un avantage numérique, avec seulement 4 min 50 s à jouer; Tanner Campbell a transporté la rondelle derrière le but des Young Nationals avant d’effectuer une passe arrière sans regarder à Finlay.

Avec Beligno regardant en direction opposée, Finlay n’a eu aucune difficulté à créer l’égalité et à forcer la tenue d’une période en prolongation et préparer le terrain pour le but victorieux de Hora.

Kilburn a obtenu cette victoire à son premier départ en matchs d’après-saison, réussissant 27 arrêts, alors que son rival Beligno a bloqué 34 des 37 tirs dirigés en sa direction dans une cause perdante.

Les deux formations ont produit en avantage numérique. Okanagan a marqué une fois en cinq occasions, alors que Toronto a terminé avec une fiche de 2 en 4 en pareille circonstance.
