FALLOON SCORES OVERTIME WINNER (AGAIN), TERRIERS WIN RBC CUP

VERNON, B.C. – Derek Falloon scored the biggest goal in Yorkton Terriers history at 15:01 of overtime, giving the Terriers a 4-3 win over the Carleton Place Canadians on Sunday afternoon and the first RBC Cup championship in franchise history.

It was Falloon’s second overtime goal in four days; he scored the extra-time winner to give Yorkton a 2-1 win over the Dauphin Kings on Thursday, a goal that clinched a semifinal spot for the West Region champions.

Falloon jammed a loose puck through the pads of Carleton Place goaltender Guillaume Therien and just inches across the goal line, giving the Terriers an unlikely national championship.

Not only did Yorkton have to win four do-or-die games in five days, they trailed 3-1 with less than three minutes to go Sunday before one of the greatest comebacks in RBC Cup history.

Tanner Lishchynsky and Dylan Johnson scored just eight seconds apart late in the third period to tie the game and force the first championship game overtime since Calgary beat Gloucester in 1995.

Daylan Gatzke had the other goal for the Terriers.

Anthony McVeigh, Stephen Baylis and Andy Sturtz scored for Carleton Place, which came up just one goal short of winning its first national championship in its first RBC Cup appearance.

McVeigh got the scoring started for the Canadians midway through the first period, rifling a shot over the glove of Yorkton goaltender Kale Thomson from in close.

But Gatzke answered six minutes later for Yorkton, tipping a Chase Norrish shot halfway to the net and sending the puck bouncing by Therien to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Despite being outshot 12-9 in the second period, the Canadians scored both goals in the middle frame; Baylis went short-side over the glove of Thomson to restore the Carleton Place lead at 4:12, and Sturtz made it a two-goal game with a superb individual effort at 10:34, outmuscling the Yorkton defence before beating Thomson on the backhand.

The Terriers came out firing in the third period, recording 17 of their 36 regulation-time shots in the final 20 minutes.

Lishchynsky cut the Canadians’ lead to one with 2:48 to go, snapping a shot over the shoulder of Therien, and Johnson tied the game right off the ensuing face-off, poking a loose puck past the Carleton Place netminder.

Yorkton had the better chances in overtime, outshooting the Canadians 10-4 in the extra period, leading to Falloon’s winner and making the Terriers the first SJHL team since Humboldt in 2008 to win the RBC Cup.

VERNON, C.-B. – Derek Falloon a marqué le but le plus important de l’histoire des Terriers de Yorkton, leur permettant de vaincre les Canadians de Carleton Place 4-3, dimanche après-midi, et de remporter le premier championnat de la Coupe RBC de l’histoire de la franchise.

C’était le deuxième but en prolongation de Falloon au cours des quatre derniers jours puisqu’il avait aussi marqué en prolongation quand Yorkton a battu les Kings de Dauphin 2-1, jeudi, pour permettre aux champions de la région Ouest de se tailler une place en demi-finale.

Falloon s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre et l’a poussée quelques pouces au-delà de la ligne des buts derrière les jambières du gardien de but de Carleton Place, Guillaume Therien, pour aider les Terriers à remporter le championnat national à la grande surprise de plusieurs.

Yorkton a non seulement dû gagner quatre matchs sans lendemain en cinq jours, mais elle tirait de l’arrière 3-1 avec moins de trois minutes à jouer dimanche avant de réussir une des plus belles remontées de l’histoire de la Coupe RBC.

Tanner Lishchynsky et Dylan Johnson ont marqué à huit secondes d’intervalle en fin de troisième période, nivelant le match et forçant la tenue de la première période de prolongation dans un match de championnat depuis que Calgary a battu Gloucester en 1995.

Daylan Gatzke a réussi l’autre but des Terriers.  

Anthony McVeigh, Stephen Baylis et Andy Sturtz ont marqué pour Carleton Place qui est passée à un but de gagner son premier championnat national à sa première présence à la Coupe RBC.
McVeigh a ouvert la marque pour les Canadians au milieu de la première période en décochant un puissant tir à bout portant par-dessus la mitaine du gardien de but de Yorkton, Kale Thomson.

Mais Gatzke a répliqué pour Yorkton six minutes plus tard en déviant un tir de Chase Norrish; la rondelle a bondi pour déjouer Therien. Ce fut nivelait la marque à 1-1 après 20 minutes de jeu.

Malgré le fait qu’ils ont été dominés 12-9 au chapitre des tirs au but en deuxième période, les Canadians ont marqué deux autres buts; Baylis a marqué au moyen d’un tir du côté rapproché par-dessus la mitaine de Thomson pour rétablir l’avance de Carleton Place à 4 min 12 s, puis Sturtz a creusé l’écart à deux buts à la suite d’un superbe effort individuel à 10 min 34 s, se démarquant d’un défenseur de Yorkton avant de déjouer Thomson du revers.

Les Terriers ont entrepris le troisième tiers avec fougue, obtenant 17 de leurs 36 tirs au but en temps réglementaire au cours des 20 dernières minutes.  

Lishchynsky a réduit l’avance des Canadians à un but alors qu’il restait 2 min 48 s à jouer en décochant un tir frappé court par-dessus l’épaule de Therien, puis Johnson a nivelé le pointage dès la mise au jeu suivante, poussant une rondelle libre derrière le gardien de but de Carleton Place.

Yorkon a obtenu les plus belles occasions de marquer en prolongation, tirant au but 10 fois contre quatre pour son adversaire. Le but de Falloon a ensuite permis aux Terriers de devenir la première équipe de la SJHL à remporter la Coupe RBC depuis Humboldt en 2008.
