FOUR GOALS IN SECOND PERIOD LEAD CANADA OVER RUSSIA AT SUMMER CAMP

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Canada made it two wins in as many nights at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp thanks to a 5-2 victory over Russia on Wednesday.

Bo Horvat (Rodney, Ont./London, OHL), Nick Ritchie (Orangeville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) and Robby Fabbri (Mississauga, Ont./Guelph, OHL) led the way with a goal and an assist apiece.

Zach Nastasiuk (Barrie, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) and Madison Bowey (Winnipeg, Man./Kelowna, WHL) were the other Canadian goal scorers.

For the Russians, Alexander Sharov and Rinat Valiev took care of the scoring, while Maxim Mamin had two assists.

The Canadians iced almost an entirely new line-up compared to the one that beat the Czech Republic 6-2 on Tuesday night in Montreal; Ritchie and Brendan Perlini (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Niagara, OHL)  were the only players to suit up for both games.

The game was scoreless through one period, with the best chance coming from Mamin, who was stopped by Philippe Desrosiers (St-Hyacinthe, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL) on a shorthanded breakaway late in the opening frame.

The first goal came off the stick of Fabbri; he intercepted a pass and stormed in all alone before beating Bilyalov over the glove a little over two minutes into the second period.

Nine minutes later it was Ritchie’s turn to find the back of the net after Connor McDavid fought off a defenceman behind the opposing net and chipped a pass to an open Fabbri in the slot, who fed it over to a wide-open Ritchie.

Russia got back within one when Mamin set up Valiev for the game’s only power play tally just shy of the 13-minute mark of the middle stanza; the teams combined to go 1-for-12 with the man advantage – Canada was 0-for-7, while Russia had a goal in five chances.

Horvat and Nastasiuk capped off the second period scoring, finding the back of the net only 25 seconds apart.

Sharov and Bowey traded goals in the third period to round out the scoring.

For the second night in a row, Canada split the game between its goaltenders. Desrosiers stopped all 14 shots he faced, while Eric Comrie (Edmonton, Alta./Tri-City, WHL) made seven saves on nine changes.

Timur Bilyalov went the distance in the Russian goal, finishing with 28 stops.

Canada will be back on the Sherbrooke ice on Thursday night, again taking on Russia (7 p.m. ET).

QUATRE BUTS EN DEUXIÈME PÉRIODE MÈNENT LE CANADA À LA VICTOIRE SUR LES RUSSES

SHERBROOKE, Qc – Le Canada a remporté un deuxième match en deux soirs au camp estival de développement Sport Chek de l’équipe nationale junior du Canada en battant les Russes 5-2 mercredi soir.  

Bo Horvat (Rodney, Ont./London, OHL), Nick Ritchie (Orangeville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) et Robby Fabbri (Mississauga, Ont./Guelph, OHL) ont ouvert la voie en accumulant un but et une aide chacun.

Zach Nastasiuk (Barrie, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) et Madison Bowey (Winnipeg, Man./Kelowna, WHL) ont été les auteurs des autres buts canadiens. 

Chez les Russes, Alexander Sharov et Rinat Valiev ont fait vibrer les cordages alors que Maxim Mamin accumulait deux aides.

La formation canadienne était presque totalement différente de celle qui avait battu la République tchèque 6-2 mardi soir à Montréal; Ritchie et Brendan Perlini (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Niagara, OHL) sont les seuls joueurs à avoir pris part aux deux matchs.  

Aucun but n’a été marqué en première période. Mamin a obtenu la plus belle occasion de marquer, s’avançant en échappée en désavantage numérique en fin de période, mais le gardien de but Philippe Desrosiers (St-Hyacinthe, Qc/Rimouski, LHJMQ) veillait au grain.

Le premier but du match a été celui de Fabbri; il a intercepté une passe et s’est avancé seul pour déjouer Bilyalov d’un tir par-dessus la mitaine peu après la deuxième minute de jeu en deuxième période.

Neuf minutes plus tard, ce fut au tour de Ritchie de faire mouche après que Connor McDavid se soit démarqué d’un défenseur derrière le filet adverse avant d’effectuer une passe à Fabbri en zone privilégiée. Ce dernier a ensuite remis la rondelle à Ritchie laissé fin seul.

La Russie a réduit l’écart à un but quand Mamin a préparé le jeu pour Valiev, qui a réussi le seul but de la rencontre en avantage numérique un peu avant la 13e minute de la période médiane. Ensemble, les équipes n’ont pu marquer qu’une fois en 12 avantages numériques – le Canada a fait chou blanc en sept supériorités et la Russie a marqué une fois en cinq occasions.

Horvat et Nastasiuk ont inscrit les derniers buts de la période, trouvant le fond du filet à seulement 25 secondes d’intervalle.

Sharov et Bowey se sont échangé des buts au troisième vingt pour compléter le pointage.

Pour un deuxième jour de suite, le Canada a fait appel à deux gardiens de but, chacun protégeant le filet pour la moitié du match. Desrosiers a bloqué les 14 tirs qu’il a affrontés, tandis qu’Eric Comrie (Edmonton, Alb./Tri-City, WHL) a réussi sept arrêts sur neuf tirs.

Timur Bilyalov a gardé le filet russe pendant tout le match, réalisant 28 arrêts.

Le Canada sera de retour sur la glace à Sherbrooke mercredi soir pour affronter à nouveau la Russie (19 h HE).
