SAIGEON SCORES TWICE, GREEN BEATS BLACK FOR FIFTH AT U17 CAMP

GARRETH MACDONALD

CALGARY, Alta. – Brandon Saigeon (Grimsby, Ont./Hamilton, OMHA) had a pair of goals and Miguel Picard (St-Gabriel, Que./Collège Notre-Dame, LHMAAAQ) scored on a penalty shot to help lead Green to a 5-1 victory over Black in the fifth-place game Monday at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.

“It’s good to finish off the camp strong,” Saigeon said after the game. “It’s too bad we couldn’t win our first two games but there was a real sense of teamwork coming into this last one.”

Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) got Green on the board near the end of the first period, busting into the Black zone and burying his own rebound past Mark Grametbauer (Halifax, N.S./Cole Harbour, NSMMHL).

Picard and Matt Cairns (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) and picked up the assists on Benson’s second goal of the camp.

After Noah Gregor (Beaumont, Alta./Leduc, AMHL) tied the game 1-1 6:30 into the second period, Picard was hauled down on a shorthanded breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Picard made the most of the opportunity, ripping a shot over Grametbauer’s glove to give Green a 2-1 lead.

Saigeon scored two goals 4:25 apart to put Green up by three late in the second period, adding a little bit of insurance.

With goaltender Stuart Skinner (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton SSAC, AMHL) on the Black bench in the dying minutes of the third period, Julien Tessier (St-Marc-des-Carrières, Que./Trois-Rivières, LHMAAAQ) added an empty net tally to seal the victory for Green.

“I think the guys just showed we’re resilient,” said Saigeon. “We just kept working, kept pushing and we happened to get some goals out there.

“It’s nice to get a few goals there but it’s definitely nice to get the win.”

Green outshot Black 34-24 in the victory.

Reilly Pickard (Halifax, N.S./Halifax, NSMMHL), who started the game for Green, stopped nine of the 10 shots fired his away in the win. Olivier Lafrenière (Bradford, Ont./York Simcoe, OMHA) was perfect in the Green goal in his half-game of work, getting in front of all 10 shots directed at him.

Grametbauer had 14 saves on 17 shots for Black while Skinner stopped 15 of 16.

SAIGEON MARQUE DEUX FOIS ET LES NOIRS BATTENT LES VERTS POUR LA CINQUIÈME PLACE AU CAMP DES M17

GARRETH MACDONALD

CALGARY, Alb.
