GUILBAULT IS SHOOTOUT HERO, WHITE WINS U17 CAMP TITLE

KARLEN HERAUF

CALGARY, Alta. – Samuel Guilbault (Varennes, Que./Collège Antoine-Girouard, LHMAAAQ) scored the lone goal in the shootout, leading White to a 2-1 win over Red in the first-place game Monday at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.

In gritty Canadian fashion, three periods (plus overtime) weren’t enough to determine a winner.

It took nine shooters before Guilbault roofed a forehand over an outstretched Jack LaFontaine (Mississauga, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL), and Brody Willms (Coquitlam, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) stopped Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Thrashers, MMAAAHL) to clinch the win.

Zach Poirier (Mountain, Ont./Upper Canada, OEMHL) opened scoring for White at 10:33 in the first period, rocketing a rebound off the post and in after the initial shot from Connor Bunnaman (Guelph, Ont./Guelph, OMHA) was turned away.

“It was a great pass by Salinitri from behind the net and Bunnaman shot it on net. The rebound came back to me and I just happened to be in the right place,” Poirier said with a smile post-game.

Despite being outshot 29-11, Poirier said White never panicked.

“We were confident as a team and we came together really well to fight through.”

Red tied the game 1-1 with less than a minute left in the opening period, when Dante Fabbro (Coquitlam, B.C./Vancouver NW, BCMML) hit Brett Crossley (Cole Harbour, N.S./Shattuck-St. Mary’s, USHS) with a pass through the middle, sending Crossley on a breakaway. Crossley finished the play with a hard shot over the shoulder of White goaltender Samuel Harvey (Alma, Que./Jonquière, LHMAAAQ).

That would be it for offence until Guibault’s shootout marker, with the goaltenders and defence taking over.

Ryan Kubic (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Thrashers, MMAAAHL) started for Red and stopped seven of eight shots, while LaFontaine stopped all three shots he faced in his 30 minutes of work.

Harvey made 16 saves on 17 changes, and Willms was 12-for-12 in relief.

“It was quite the experience,” Willms said of the shootout. “I had one puck stand right on the line there, and a couple of posts, so it was good [to get the win].”

The game capped off what was an incredible week for 108 young players from across Canada.

For Willms, winning was exciting, but the lessons he will take home are even more important.

“The experience we’ve had here has been pretty unbelievable, with all the off-ice presentations, the staff here, the facilities we’ve been able to use. Going into the season I feel like going through this camp is going to be a big help.”

GUILBAULT EST LE HÉROS EN TIRS DE BARRAGE ET LES BLANCS REMPORTENT LE TITRE AU CAMP

KARLEN HERAUF

CALGARY, Alb.
