MCGILL SCORES LATE, RED BEATS WHITE AGAIN AT WOMEN’S U18 CAMP

CALGARY, Alta. – Rhyen McGill (Whitby, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) scored the game-winning goal with 1:47 left, capping a busy final eight minutes and giving Red a 3-2 win over White on Thursday night at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp.

Red has won the first two games of the three-game intrasquad series; it earned a 3-1 victory in Monday’s camp opener.

Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) and Valérie Audet (St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que./Québec Nord, LHFDQ) also found the back of the net for Red, which scored a trio of unassisted goals.

Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) and Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) had the goals for White in a losing cause.

Both offences came out firing, combining for 11 shots on goal before the game had reached the five-minute mark, and 25 in the first period alone.

But both goaltenders stood tall in the opening 20 minutes; Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL) made 11 saves in the Red goal, while Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, Midget AA) was 14-for-15 for White.

Potomak had the lone goal of the period on a Red power play, picking up the puck behind the White goal and beating Neatby to the short-side post on the wraparound at 11:57.

The netminders continued to shine in the second period; Vandyk finished with 17 saves on as many chances in her 30 minutes of work, and Neatby turned aside 19 of 20 in a half-game performance.

White finally drew even late in the middle frame on a power play of its own; Lindsay Eastwood (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) made a pretty pass to the top of the Red crease, where Labbe was parked for the easy tap-in goal, making it a 1-1 game through 40 minutes.

Audet restored the Red lead with 8:06 left, her shot tipping off the stick of a White defenceman and past a helpless Carly Jackson (Amherst, N.S./Cumberland County, Midget AA), but Agnew tied it for White 3:01 later, taking a pass in close and tucking a backhand around Marlène Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS).

That set the stage for McGill, whose shot from the face-off circle to the left of Jackson eluded the White goaltender with less than two minutes remaining.

Boissonnault ended up recording the win in the Red goal, making eight saves on 10 chances, while Jackson was the hard-luck loser for White, finishing with 12 stops.

The series wraps up Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT.

CALGARY, Alb. – Rhyen McGill (Whitby, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) a inscrit le but gagnant avec 1 min 47 s à écouler, mettant fin à une séquence occupée de huit minutes et permettant aux Rouges de vaincre les Blancs 3-2 jeudi soir, au camp de sélection de l’équipe nationale féminine des moins de 18 ans du Canada.

Les Rouges ont remporté les deux premiers matchs intraéquipes de cette série de trois. La formation l’avait emporté 3-1 lundi au premier duel du camp.

Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, C.-B./Pursuit of Excellence, midget AAA) et Valérie Audet (St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Qc/Québec Nord, LHFDQ) ont également trouvé le fond du filet pour les Rouges, qui ont inscrit trois filets sans aide.

Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alb./Warner School, JWHL) et Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) ont marqué pour les Blancs dans une cause perdante.

Les deux offensives ont connu un fort début de rencontre, obtenant un total combiné de 11 tirs avant la cinquième minute de jeu et de 25 au premier tiers.

Les deux cerbères ont brillé dans les 20 premières minutes. Julia Vandyk (Cambridge, Ont./Cambridge, PWHL) a réalisé 11 arrêts devant la cage des Rouges, alors que Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, midget AA) a bloqué 14 des 15 tirs dirigés vers elle.

Potomak a compté l’unique but de la période sur le jeu de puissance, s’emparant de la rondelle derrière le filet des Blancs pour battre Neatby du côté rapproché sur un enroulé à 11 min 57 s.

Les gardiennes de but ont continué de s’imposer en deuxième période. Vandyk a terminé la rencontre avec 17 arrêts en autant d’occasions durant ses 30 minutes de travail. Neatby a bloqué 19 rondelles sur 20 durant l’autre moitié du match.

Les Blancs ont finalement créé l’égalité en deuxième période lors d’un avantage numérique. Lindsay Eastwood (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) a effectué une belle passe vers le haut du demi-cercle des Rouges, où Labbe était installée pour facilement rediriger le disque dans le filet. C’était 1-1 après 40 minutes.

Audet a redonné l’avance aux Rouges avec 8 min 06 s à écouler, son tir déviant sur le bâton de la défenseure des Blancs avant de tromper la vigilance de Carly Jackson (Amherst, N.-É./Cumberland County, midget AA), mais Agnew a remis les pendules à l’heure 3 min 01 s plus tard, acceptant une passe près du filet avant de battre Marlène Boissonnault (Dundee, N.-B./École Rothesay Netherwood, CAHS) d’un tir du revers.

Tout était prêt pour le but de McGill, dont le tir du cercle de mise au jeu à la gauche de Jackson a battu la cerbère des Blancs avec moins de deux minutes à faire.

Boissonnault a enregistré la victoire devant le filet des Rouges, bloquant huit des dix rondelles dirigées vers elle, tandis que Jackson a subi la défaite, avec 12 arrêts.

La série prendra fin samedi après-midi. La première mise au jeu est prévue à 16 h HE/13 h HP.
