POWER PLAY HELPS CANADA TO SERIES-OPENING WIN OVER U.S.

JASON LA ROSE

CALGARY, Alta. – A goal from Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) with 6:37 left stood up as the game-winner as Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team opened its three-game series against the United States with a 3-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.

The Canadians have won 10 of their last 12 against their North American rivals, including three straight victories in the gold medal game at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship.

Lindsay Agnew (Oakville, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) and Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, JWHL) scored the other goals for Canada, both on the power play; the Canadians finished 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

Alyssa Gorecki and Rebecca Gilmore were the American goal scorers.

Canada carried the play in the first period, and outshot the U.S., 14-11, but neither team could find the back of the net and the game headed to the first intermission without a goal.

But it took just 44 seconds of the second for the scoring to begin; with the Canadians enjoying a man advantage, Agnew found herself alone in front and buried her first international goal for a 1-0 lead.

Gorecki pulled the U.S. even on a scramble in front of Canadian goaltender Marlène Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS) midway through the middle frame, but Potomak restored the one-goal lead for Canada at 16:56, finishing the rebound of a Lindsay Eastwood (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) shot.

The line of Potomak, O’Neill and Ryleigh Houston (Winnipeg, Man./Bamoral Hall School, JWHL) struck again the for the Canadians with just over seven minutes left, with Houston finding O’Neill in front to give Canada its first two-goal lead.

That goal proved huge when Gilmore scored for the U.S. with five seconds left, with the Americans on the power play and netminder Brittany Bugalski on the bench for an extra attacker.

Boissonnault got the win in her international debut, finishing with 23 saves, while Bugalski took the loss despite a 28-save performance in the U.S. goal.

The teams are back on the ice Friday night at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park, with the puck set to drop at 6:30 p.m. MT.
