STACEY’S THREE POINTS HELP BLACK BEAT NWCAA AT FALL FESTIVAL

CALGARY, Alta. – Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Dartmouth College, ECAC) led the offence with two goals and an assist, sparking Black to a 5-2 win over a Junior B team from the Northwest Calgary Athletic Association on Sunday morning at Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival.

Stacey opened and closed the scoring, helping Black win its first game in three tries at camp.

Jessica Campbell (Rocanville, Sask./Calgary, CWHL), Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) had the other goals for Black, which controlled the puck for much of the game, outshooting the NWCAA 40-17.

Sam Robertson and Trevor Pickett scored for the NWCAA.

It didn’t take long for Black to get the scoring started; Stacey converted her own rebound off a breakaway try just 4:27 in for an early 1-0 advantage.

Campbell doubled the lead at 17:45, finishing off a pretty feed from Samantha Cogan (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean, PWHL), but Robertson got the NWCAA back within a goal very late in the period, scoring with 13.3 seconds left in the opening period to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes.

Black continued to apply the pressure in the second period, holding a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn’t beat NWCAA goaltender Patrick Hird and carried its one-goal lead to the third.

Bendus gave Black some insurance at 3:50 of the final frame, squeezing a shot through Hird’s legs, and Krzyzaniak made it 4-1 just 49 seconds after that for additional breathing room.

Pickett scored 35 seconds after Krzyzaniak’s goal to cut the lead to two, but Stacey jammed in her second of the game with 3:15 left to provide the final margin of victory.

Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) wasn’t busy in the Black goal, making just 15 saves to earn the victory.

CALGARY, Alb. – Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont./Collège Dartmouth, ECAC) a mené l’offensive avec deux buts et une aide, aidant les Noirs à vaincre une équipe junior B de la Northwest Calgary Athletic Association par la marque de 5-2 dimanche matin au Festival d’automne de l’équipe nationale féminine du Canada. 

Stacey a inscrit le premier et le dernier but de la rencontre pour aider les Noirs à inscrire un premier gain en trois tentatives au camp.

Jessica Campbell (Rocanville, Sask./Calgary, LCHF), Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont./Brampton, LCHF) et Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Man./Université du Dakota du Nord, WCHA) ont marqué les autres buts des Noirs qui ont contrôlé la rondelle pour la majeure partie du match, dominant la NWCAA 40-17 au chapitre des tirs au but.

Les Noirs n’ont pas tardé à ouvrir le pointage; Stacey a marqué en s’emparant de son propre rebond à la suite d’une échappée à seulement 4 min 27 s pour donner l’avance aux siennes. 

Campbell a doublé l’avance à 17 min 45 s après avoir capté une superbe passe de Samantha Cogan (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean, PWHL), mais Robertson a réduit l’écart à un but pour la NWCAA tard en fin de période alors qu’il restait 13,3 secondes au premier tiers qui s’est terminé 2-1.

Les Noirs ont continué d’exercer de la pression en deuxième période, dominant leurs adversaires 12-6 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais sans parvenir à déjouer le gardien de but de la NWCAA, Patrick Hird. La troisième période a commencé avec un écart d’un but entre les deux formations.

Bendus a redonné une certaine marge de manœuvre aux Noirs à 3 min 50 s du dernier vingt, tirant la rondelle entre les jambières de Hird, puis Krzyzaniak a creusé l’écart à 4-1 seulement 49 secondes plus tard.  

Pickett a trouvé le fond du filet 35 secondes après le but de Krzyzaniak pour réduire l’écart à deux, mais Stacey a inscrit son deuxième but du match alors qu’il restait 3 min 15 s à jouer pour sceller l’issue de la rencontre.

Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Qc/Université du Wisconsin, WCHA) n’a pas été très occupée devant le filet des Noirs, effectuant seulement 15 arrêts pour porter la victoire à sa fiche.
