ASSERHOLT SCORES WITH MINUTE LEFT IN OVERTIME, SWEDEN WINS BRONZE

Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Emma Nordin tied it with 3:33 left in regulation and Jenni Asserholt won it with one minute left in overtime, as Sweden claimed the bronze medal over Finland at the 2014 4 Nations Cup.

With a shootout looming, Asserholt slid a backhand five-hole and brought a happy end to what had been a frustrating four games for her team.

The goals were the first two of the tournament for Sweden.

Kim Marti’n Hasson made 27 saves in the win.

Michelle Karvinen scored the lone goal for Finland. Eveliina Suonpää stopped 14 shots for Finland.

In a match-up between two teams that have struggled to score all week – Finland had only two goals itself – the first period suggested more of the same was to come. Finland fired only eight shots on net, but it was eight more than Sweden managed. It was the second time during the tournament Sweden didn’t register a shot in a period.

It would take nearly 40 minutes for a goal.

With Sweden serving a too-many-men penalty, Finland used its man-advantage to set up an extended stay in the offensive zone. Noora Tulus sent a cross-ice pass from the corner to Karvinen, who, left alone to the left of the Marti’n Hasson, converted the one-timer just outside the face-off circle.

Sweden was creating its best scoring chances of the tournament in the second half of the game, but snake bitten, tipped a couple of shots wide and got stoned by Marti’n Hasson on a pair of partial breaks.

Finland was given a great chance to double its lead early in the third, when Josefine Holmgren and Asserholt were whistled for body checking minors 20 seconds apart. The missed opportunity on the extended five-on-three would loom large later.

The Swedes finally ended more than 236 minutes of scoreless frustration late in the third. Nordin drove through traffic, her backhand just squeaking through Suonpää with 3:33 left in the period.

Sweden was able to stay close thanks to its goaltending. Marti’n Hasson and Sara Grahn were the story all week, stopping 143 of 150 shots.

ASSERHOLT COMPTE AVEC UNE MINUTE À JOUER EN PROLONGATION ET LA SUÈDE REMPORTE LE BRONZE

par Wendy Graves

KAMLOOPS, C.-B.
