FIVE DIFFERENT GOAL SCORERS PACE CANADA TO PRE-WORLD JUNIORS WIN

WENDY GRAVES

OTTAWA, Ont.. – Five different players found the back of the net for Canada’s National Junior Team on Sunday as it topped Sweden 5-2 in its second game on the RBC Road to the World Juniors.

Canada got goals from each member of its top line: Max Domi (Toronto, Ont./London, OHL), Anthony Duclair (Laval, Que./N.Y. Rangers, NHL) and Sam Reinhart (West Vancouver, B.C./Kootenay, WHL). Defenceman Josh Morrissey (Calgary, Alta./Kelowna, WHL), with his second goal of pre-tournament play, and fellow blue-liner Shea Theodore (Aldergrove, B.C./Seattle, WHL) also scored.

Joe Hicketts (Kamloops, B.C./Victoria, WHL) had two assists. Domi and Duclair each added a helper.

Eric Comrie (Edmonton, Alta./Tri-City, WHL) stopped 17 of 19 shots for the win.

Gustav Forsling – on the power play – and William Nylander – on a penalty shot – scored for Sweden.

Samuel Ward made 28 saves for Sweden.

After being stonewalled by a hot goalie Friday night, Canada wasted no time getting on the board Sunday thanks to an early power play. With multiple players crashing down low, it was Domi finishing from the side of the net.

Canada doubled its lead before the midway mark of the period. Madison Bowey (Winnipeg, Man./Kelowna, WHL) fed a streaking Nick Ritchie (Orangeville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL), whose one-timer was denied by Ward. While the rebound found its way out to the point, Ritchie stayed in front of the net and helped screen Morrissey’s point shot.

Sweden picked up its play in the second and was rewarded seven minutes in on the power play. Forsling’s shot from just inside the blue line deflected off of Frédérik Gauthier (St-Lin-Laurentides, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL), changing direction and fooling Comrie.

Canada restored its two-goal lead three minutes later. After Ward misplayed the puck, Duclair fired a shot from the slot over the goalie’s blocker.

Theodore roofed a shot from the face-off dot and Reinhart finished off a give-and-go with Hicketts to give Canada a four-goal lead halfway through the third period.

Sweden wrapped up the scoring minutes later after Darnell Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) tripped up Nylander breaking in alone. Nylander beat Comrie to the blocker side on the ensuing penalty shot.

Canada wraps up its pre-tournament schedule Tuesday night (7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT) when it takes on Switzerland at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Que.

CINQ BUTEURS DIFFÉRENTS MÈNENT LE CANADA À LA VICTOIRE EN PRÉPARATION DU MONDIAL JUNIOR

WENDY GRAVES
