STEPHENS’ THREE POINTS LEAD CANADA TO SEMIS AT U18 WORLDS

ZUG, Switzerland – Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) led the way with two goals and an assist, helping Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team to the semifinals at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship with a 5-3 quarter-final win over Sweden on Thursday.

The Canadians will face the United States in a Saturday semifinal in Zug (time to be determined).

Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C./Prince George, WHL), Deven Sideroff (Summerland, B.C./Kamloops, WHL) and Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) had the other goals for Canada, which is among the final four teams at the world championship for the fifth year in a row.

Knott finished with a goal and two assists, Harkins had a goal and a helper, and Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) chipped in with two assists to tie U.S. forward Auston Matthews for the tournament scoring lead with 12 points.

Harkins got the scoring started just 5:11 in, taking a pass from Ethan Bear (Ochapowace, Sask./Seattle, WHL) and wiring a wrist shot to the short-side on Swedish goaltender Felix Sandstrom, and Stephens’ first made it 2-0 just 56 seconds later.

The Swedes got one back when Lucas Carlsson blasted a point shot past Canadian netminder Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) on the power play at 7:11, but Sideroff restored the two-goal lead in the last minute of the period, scoring from in close to make it 3-1 after 20 minutes.

Sweden again cut the lead to one early in the second period when Joel Eriksson took advantage of a turnover in the Canadian zone to score shorthanded.

Stephens answered late in the middle frame, taking a pass from Knott, spinning in the slot and roofing a shot over the blocker of Sandstrom to put Canada back up by two heading to the third period.

Canada missed a glorious opportunity to put the Swedes away when it failed to score on 1:34 two-man advantage, before Sweden got back within one with 4:26 left on the luckiest of bounces.

With Sawchenko on the bench on a delayed Swedish penalty, Knott’s pass back to the point hopped over Bear’s stick and slid the length of the ice into the empty net, gifting the Swedes the 4-3 goal.

But Knott got it right back on the ensuing power play, redirecting a feed from Stephens past Sandstrom just 22 seconds after his own goal, and rounding out the scoring.

The Swedes held a slight advantage in shots on goal, 38-34.

ZOUG, Suisse – Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) a mené l’offensive avec deux buts et une aide pour aider l’équipe nationale masculine des moins de 18 ans du Canada à se qualifier pour les demi-finales du Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace des moins de 18 ans 2015 de l’IIHF grâce à une victoire de 5-3 sur la Suède en quart de finale, jeudi.

Les Canadiens affronteront les États-Unis en demi-finale samedi à Zoug (heure à déterminer).

Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, C.-B./Prince George, WHL), Deven Sideroff (Summerland, C.-B./Kamloops, WHL) et Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) ont marqué les autres buts du Canada qui accède au carré d’as au championnat mondial pour une cinquième année de suite.

Knott a accumulé un but et deux aides, Harkins, un but et une aide, et Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, C.-B./Seattle, WHL) deux aides pour retrouver l’avant américain Auston Matthews au sommet du classement des pointeurs du tournoi avec 12 points.

Harkins a ouvert le pointage à 5 min 11 s du premier tiers en captant une passe d’Ethan Bear (Ochapowace, Sask./Seattle, WHL) et en décochant un tir du poignet du côté court pour déjouer le gardien de but suédois Felix Sandstrom. Stephens a ensuite doublé l’avance seulement 56 secondes plus tard. 

Les Suédois ont réduit l’écart quand le puissant tir de la pointe de Lucas Carlsson a trompé la vigilance du gardien de but canadien Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alb./Moose Jaw, WHL) pendant un avantage numérique à 7 min 11 s, mais Sideroff a rétabli l’avance de deux buts au cours de la dernière minute de jeu de la période, portant la marque à 3-1 après 20 minutes.

La Suède a réduit l’écart à un but à nouveau tôt au deuxième tiers lorsque Joel Eriksson a profité d’un revirement en territoire canadien pour marquer alors que les siens étaient à court d’un homme.

Stephens a répliqué tard en période médiane en captant une passe de Knott, en virevoltant en zone privilégiée et en décochant un tir par-dessus le gant bloqueur de Sandstrom pour redonner une avance de deux buts au Canada après 40 minutes.

Le Canada a raté une superbe occasion de sceller l’issue du match lorsqu’il n’a pu marquer pendant une supériorité numérique de deux joueurs qui a duré 1 min 43 s. Puis, par la plus pure des chances, les Suédois ont réduit l’écart alors qu’il restait 4 min 26 s à jouer dans la rencontre.

Alors que Sawchenko se trouvait au banc des joueurs en raison d’une punition à retardement, la passe de Knott vers la pointe a bondi par-dessus le bâton de Bear et a glissé jusque dans le filet désert, faisant cadeau d’un but aux Suédois. La marque était maintenant de 4-3.  

Mais Knott a corrigé la situation pendant la supériorité numérique qui a suivi en déviant une passe de Stephens derrière Sandstrom seulement 22 secondes après son propre but pour mettre fin au pointage.

Les Suédois ont tiré 38 fois au but contre 34 pour le Canada.
