DESBIENS GETS SECOND SHUTOUT, CANADA ADVANCES TO PLAY FOR GOLD

DAVID BRIEN

MALMÖ, Sweden – Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) stopped all 19 shots she faced for her second shutout in as many starts, leading Canada’s National Women’s Team to the gold medal game at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship thanks to a 3-0 semifinal win over Finland on Friday.

Canada will face the United States in the final on Saturday (10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT, TSN). It’s the 16th time in as many world championships that the North American rivals have met for gold.

Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) scored the game-winner and Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) added a pair of goals for the Canadians, who outshot Finland 40-19.

Poulin got the scoring started on the power play less than seven minutes in; after a failed clearing attempt, Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) fed the puck to Poulin, whose pass attempt rebounded off a Finnish defender and back onto to her stick for an easy tap-in.

Canada controlled the play in the first two periods, holding a 34-9 advantage in shots on goal through 40 minutes, but Finnish netminder Meeri Raisanen kept it a one-goal game.

Spooner gave the Canadians some breathing room just 25 seconds into the third period, benefitting from a miscue behind the Finnish net; Raisanen left her crease to stop the puck behind her net, only to see it deflect of Jenni Hiirikoski and onto Spooner’s stick for an easy 2-0 goal.

She capped the scoring midway through the period with a highlight-reel goal, slipping the puck through the legs of Anna Kilponen on a one-on-one before roofing a backhand past Raisanen.

Spooner has four goals in the tournament, all against the Finns.

Desbiens was at her busiest in the third period, making 10 of her 19 stops, and has started her Team Canada career with back-to-back shutouts; she blanked Russia in her national team debut last Sunday.

DESBIENS RÉUSSIT UN DEUXIÈME JEU BLANC ET LE CANADA ACCÈDE AU MATCH POUR L’OR

DAVID BRIEN
