HALL’S HAT TRICK HELPS CANADA TO ROUT OF GERMANY

JASON LA ROSE

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Taylor Hall (Kingston, Ont./Edmonton, NHL) scored three times, sparking Canada’s National Men’s Team to a one-sided 10-0 win over Germany at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on Sunday.

The win keeps the Canadians unbeaten in Group A ahead of a clash with the host Czechs on Monday (2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT, TSN) at O2 Arena.

Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, NHL) scored on a third-period penalty shot and added three assists, and Claude Giroux (Hearst, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) had a goal and two helpers for Canada, which got points from 14 different players.

Cody Eakin (Winnipeg, Man./Dallas, NHL), with two, Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.S./Pittsburgh, NHL), Aaron Ekblad (Belle River, Ont./Florida, NHL) and Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, Alta./Buffalo, NHL) had the other Canadian goals.

Martin Jones (North Vancouver, B.C./Los Angeles, NHL) made 17 saves for the shutout.

The Germans had the early advantage with a pair of power play opportunities in the first eight minutes, but Jones kept the game scoreless until the Canadians grabbed momentum.

Crosby got the offence going at 8:02, finishing a 2-on-1 with Ryan O’Reilly (Varna, Ont./Colorado, NHL) by going up and over German goaltender Dennis Endras, and Hall finished a feed from Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./Edmonton, Alta.) just 23 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.

Eakin scored twice in less than three minutes before the end of the first period, sending Canada to the dressing room with a commanding four-goal advantage after 20 minutes.

Hall scored his second just 2:10 into the second period and Ekblad took a pass from Giroux and rocketed a shot over the glove of Endras at 4:29, pushing the lead to 6-0 and chasing the German netminder after six goals on just 15 shots.

Ennis fed Giroux from behind the net at 7:34 to make it 7-0 before the roles were reversed at 15:16, and Hall finished his hat trick off a gorgeous saucer pass from Duchene with 23 seconds left in the middle frame.

Duchene had the lone goal in an uneventful third period, going five-hole on a penalty shot after German defenceman Stephan Daschner had shot the Canadian’s loose stick away before he could pick it up.

Jones faced just four shots in the first period and none in the first 15 minutes of the second as Canada controlled the puck for long stretches through the first two periods.

The Canadians doubled up Germany in shots on goal, 34-17.

(14 h HE/11 h HP, RDS) à l’aréna 02.
