CANADA ERASES THREE-GOAL DEFICIT TO DEFEAT SWEDEN

Wendy Graves

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – It took 52 minutes for Canada’s National Men’s Team to get a power play opportunity Wednesday. It proved to be well worth the wait.

Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, Alta./Buffalo, NHL) took a drop pass from Taylor Hall (Kingston, Ont./Edmonton, NHL) and wired a wrist shot home with 6:29 to play in the third period, giving Canada its first lead of the day on the way to a 6-4 win over Sweden at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Three minutes earlier Patrick Wiercioch’s (Maple Ridge, B.C./Ottawa, NHL) wrist shot from the high slot tied the game 4-4, the second time Canada had worked its way back to even after an early three-goal deficit.

After the first 20 minutes Canada found itself badly outplayed, outshot – 14-5 – and outscored – 3-0. But over the final 40, the Canadians found their footing, outshooting the Swedes 34-18 and outscoring them 6-1.

Hall, Aaron Ekblad (Belle River, Ont./Florida, NHL), Sean Couturier (Bathurst, N.B./Philadelphia, NHL) and Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Dallas, NHL) also scored for Canada.

Mike Smith (Kingston, Ont./Arizona, NHL) made 28 saves for the win.

With the victory Canada moved four points clear of Sweden atop the Group A standings.

After dominating in its first three games, Canada showed it could win with resiliency, too.

When Anton Lander slid the puck under Smith five minutes into the game, it marked the first time Canada had trailed in the tournament. After two goals 28 seconds apart from Victor Rask and Filip Forsberg at the end of the first gave Sweden a three-goal lead, head coach Todd McClellan (Melville, Sask.) tinkered with his lines in the second.

Just under seven minutes into the period, Canada finally got on the board. Showing the energy and urgency it lacked at the beginning, the team took advantage of a mad scramble in front of the net, with Ekblad eventually firing home a loose puck through traffic from the slot.

When John Klingberg hauled down Hall on a breakaway five minutes later, Canada was awarded its third penalty shot of the event. Just like Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.S./Pittsburgh, NHL) and Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, NHL) had, Hall converted, bringing Canada within one.

Three minutes later Couturier deflected Ekblad’s point shot over Anders Nilsson’s shoulder to tie the game.

Fifty-six seconds later Oscar Moller attempted to restore the Swedish ship, one-timing a shot from the face-off circle to give his team the lead right back.

Seguin’s empty-netter with less than two to play in the third wrapped up the scoring.

Canada (4-0-0-0) next plays France (1-0-0-2) on Saturday at 6:15 a.m. ET/3:15 a.m. PT.

LE CANADA COMBLE UN DÉFICIT DE TROIS BUTS ET BAT LA SUÈDE

Wendy Graves
