CANADA ROLLS PAST SWISS TO REMAIN PERFECT AT WORLDS

Wendy Graves

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Team got goals from seven different players – and points from 15 different skaters – to roll past Switzerland 7-2 on Sunday, improving its record to 6-0 and clinching Group A at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Sean Couturier (Bathurst, N.B./Philadelphia, NHL) led the way with a goal and two assists. Aaron Ekblad (Belle River, Ont./Florida, NHL), Cody Eakin (Winnipeg, Man./Dallas, NHL) and Claude Giroux (Hearst, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) each had a goal and an assist. Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Dallas, NHL), Nathan MacKinnon (Cole Harbour, N.S./Colorado, NHL) and Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./Edmonton, NHL) also scored for Canada.

Mike Smith (Kingston, Ont./Arizona, NHL) made 23 saves in picking up his fourth win of the tournament.

The Canadian offence continued to click; it’s now scored at least six goals in five of its games and its 39 goals are nine more than the next closest team, Sweden.

It wasted no time – a mere 52 seconds – getting on the board Sunday. Swiss goalie Reto Berra couldn’t squeeze a Jake Muzzin (Woodstock, Ont./Los Angeles, NHL) shot, leaving the puck sitting in the crease for Seguin to tap in and score for the fourth straight game.

While Smith would get fooled on a Morris Trachsler shot from the goal line a few minutes later, he came up big late in the period when he stopped Andres Ambuhl on a breakaway. Minutes later MacKinnon sent a wrist shot over Berra’s shoulder with 18 seconds left in the first to give Canada a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Ekblad’s third goal of the tournament – a slap shot from the high slot that went low corner – put Canada up two eight minutes into the middle frame.

Eberle upped the lead to three with a minute to go in the period when he scored on the power play – the fourth straight game Canada has scored on the man-advantage – on a second chance from the doorstep.

Eakin then scored with a second to go in the second when he beat everyone to the puck after Ekblad’s point shot deflected off of Couturier to the side of the net.

Damien Brunner took advantage of a Canadian miscue in front of Smith to get one back for the Swiss early in the third, but that’s as close as his team would get.

Couturier and Giroux – on the power play – both buried rebounds in the second half of the third to round out the scoring.

Canada (6-0-0-0) plays its preliminary finale on Tuesday (6 a.m. ET/3 a.m. PT) against Austria (0-1-1-3).

LE CANADA DOMINE LA SUISSE ET CONSERVE SA FICHE PARFAITE AU MONDIAL

Wendy Graves
