GIGUERE SCORES TWICE, CANADA EDGES RUSSIA FOR FIRST WORLDS WIN

MORGAN BELL

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Élizabeth Giguère (Quebec City, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP) scored twice, Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) added a goal and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team earned its first victory at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship, beating Russia 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Potomak finished with a goal and an assist, Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, PWHL) had two helpers and Kristen Campbell (Brandon, Man./Shaftesbury Academy, CAHS) made 11 saves to pick up the win in the Canadian goal.

Giguère put Canada on the board first at 1:46 of the opening period; from the top of the circle her quick wrist shot beat Russian netminder Valeria Tarakanova for her first international goal.

With the Canadians applying heavy pressure, Potomak added to Canada’s tally at 10:06, picking up the rebound of a Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) shot and sliding it past Tarakanova for a 2-0 lead.

The Russians cut into the Canadian lead late in the second period when Fanuza Kadirova snuck a shot past Campbell at 18:25, but Giguère quickly answered back for Canada, converted a set-up from Gebhard just 53 seconds later for her second of the game and a 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

After Canada dominated puck control for most of the third period (it held an 18-5 advantage in shots on goal), Russia got back within one after Nina Pirogova’s power play goal with just 2:04 to go.

But that would be as close as the Russians would get, as Campbell earned her first Team Canada victory.

Canada outshot Russia by a three-to-one margin, 39-13.

The Canadians are back to action on Thursday, taking on the Czech Republic in their final preliminary round game at HarborCenter; puck drop is set for 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT.

GIGUÈRE MARQUE DEUX FOIS ET LE CANADA BAT LA RUSSIE POUR SON PREMIER GAIN AU MONDIAL

MORGAN BELL
